FadiG. Akar, PhD, FHRS: Dr. Akar completed his PhD training in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University and his post-doctoral training in molecular cardiology at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Akar was subsequently promoted to assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiology at Johns Hopkins University from 2004 to 2007. Dr. Akar joined the Cardiovascular Research Center at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in 2007, where he established the Cardiac Bioelectricity Research Laboratory. The Akar lab is dedicated to uncovering the mechanisms that promote arrhythmias in common structural heart diseases and to develop novel gene-based approaches to prevent these malignant arrhythmias.

Nour Raad, MD, PhD: After earning her BS in physics from the American University of Beirut (AUB) in 2005 and her MD in 2009, Nour won a scholarship from the International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) for the PhD program at the Gttingen Graduate School for Neurosciences and Molecular Biosciences (GGNB) in Germany. She concluded her PhD in 2014. She joined an interdisciplinary clinical and basic research program between the Department of Cardiology at the Georg-August University Medical Center and the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization in Gttingen for three years before joining the Cardiology Department at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai

Alejandro Chavez, MS: Alejandro completed his Bachelor of Science in Biology with a background in Bioinformatics and Business Administration from Fordham University in New York City. Currently, he is completing his graduate studies at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He focuses his investigations on mitochondrial dynamics as a therapeutic target for several cardiac disorders such as ischemia-reperfusion injury, heart failure, and diabetes.

Zeki Ilkan, PhD: Zeki graduated from Imperial College London with a BSc in Biochemistry in 2011, followed by an MRes in Biomedical Research in 2013, with distinction. He was awarded a 3.5 year Medical Research Council (MRC) Doctoral Training Award to pursue a PhD in Cardiovascular Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of Leicester, United Kingdom. After completing his PhD in 2017, he joined the Cardiology Department at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai as a postdoctoral fellow to investigate novel cardiac-specific gene therapy approaches targeting mitochondrial proteins in various mouse and rat models of metabolic disease to prevent post-ischemic arrhythmias.

Objective: Placenta previa (PP) and placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) disorders are major causes of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH). There is a variety of surgical management options with inexplicit reported success rates. Uterine sandwich is a combination of uterine compression sutures and intrauterine balloon placement to achieve hemostasis. The aim of this study was to present our experience of seven women managed with a novel "lower uterine sandwich" technique to control post-cesarean hemorrhage due to PP accreta.

Materials and methods: Seven pregnant women diagnosed as having PP totalis accreta underwent a post-cesarean procedure combining bilateral ligation of the uterine artery, utero-ovarian artery, and internal iliac artery, Pereira compression sutures implemented on the uterine isthmus, Foley catheter placement into the lower uterine segment, and transvaginal cervical cerclage application, namely "Caliskan's uterine sandwich technique".

Results: All women included in this study had placental invasion abnormalities of varying degrees. Postoperative diffusion magnetic resonance imaging assessment revealed a completely normal and preserved uterine blood supply. All women menstruated regularly in their postoperative follow-up period and two women conceived again and delivered uneventfully. None of the patients experienced morbid complications nor required hysterectomy.

Conclusion: This novel procedure appears to be a plausible fertility and organ-preserving option in cases of intractable PPH, particularly in lower uterine segment bleeding. This uterine sandwich technique may allow physicians to manage massive hemorrhage due to PAS conservatively by preserving the uterus and its functions without major complications.

It was told that a couple of 10 years, Reuben and Dimas, thought of creating something different, and they came up with the idea of writing a novel. Reuben the genius, combined with Dimas the romantic, wrote together a novel inspired by a rare sad ending fairy tale about a knight, a princess, and a shooting star (ksatria, putri dan bintang jatuh).

CONTENT WARNING (list may contain spoilers for some people): This book is Grimdark. There is a lot of violence, gore, heavy language. It also deals with very heavy themes like realistic representation of disability, has descriptive sexual content, self-harm, mental illness, rape and suicidal ideation.

And I cannot talk about surprisingly human and relatable characters without talking about the Eleventh Seed themself, Ievarus. What could have been simply a plot device, Ardalan turned into a fully fleshed out and surprisingly likable character. Ievarus has no understanding of the real world nor of human customs, and yet this lack of knowledge comes out in such real and lived in ways that by the end of the novel I liked Ievarus more than any other character.

A dark cosmic horror novel that also explores the good in humanity, this book is perfect for fans of grimdark and epic fantasy. The length of the book betrays it just a little bit, as the middle of the book starts to drag while Ardalan moves all of the characters into position. Luckily, the characters are strong enough to push readers through the draggy bits. While imperfect, this book read differently than any other fantasy book I have picked up, and I recommend to readers looking for their next chonky book.

Breast cancer is the most-diagnosed cancer type among women. The triple-negative subtype is an especially aggressive type of breast cancer. Although chemotherapy is almost the only option for the treatment of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), currently used chemotherapeutics are not effective enough, considering the poor survival rate of patients. Therefore, novel compounds need to be developed to improve survival rates. It has been known that quinonic compounds, which are found in nature, have antibacterial, antifungal, and antitumorigenic properties. Naphthoquinones are members of the quinone family and are widely used in research due to their promising properties. In this study, we evaluated the cytotoxic activity of a novel naphthoquinone-derived compound (1,4-naphthoquinone (1,4-NQ)) against two different breast cancer cells: a hormone-responsive cell line (MCF-7) and a triple-negative cell line (MDA-MB-231). As a result, 1,4-NQ decreased cell viability in both tested cell lines in a dose-dependent manner. Increased apoptotic markers (presence of pyknotic nuclei, annexin-V positivity, caspase 3/7 activity, and decreased mitochondrial membrane potential) and DNA damage were especially observed in MDA-MB-231 cells after treatment with the compound. Considering the promising cytotoxic effect of the compound, 1,4-NQ needs further evaluation as a potential candidate for the treatment of TNBC.
