I've just bought a second hand 5D Mk iii and I've noticed when taking a picture through the view finder the shutter sounds significantly faster than if I'm taking it using live view. Settings are the same in each. Any ideas?

That is logical. DSLR's are different from Mirrorless cameras. When you put your 5DIII in live view mode it is essentially working as Mirrorless camera, but it is working around its default nature as a camera with an optical and not electronic viewfinder. Mirrorless cameras don't have mirrors or pentaprisms and that is the difference.

When you use the viewfinder the camera is bouncing the image you see off the mirror and makes the settings for taking the picture. When you press the shutter, the mirror flips up the shutter opens and the sensor is exposed.

In live view mode, the mirror is up and the shutter is open. When you make your settings those are stored in a buffer, then when you press the shutter, the mirror is already flipped up, then embarks on process above : i.e. up, the shutter only has to close, then the aperture and shutter speed are set, and the shutter actuates. In other words, shooting in optical view requires a whole extra shutter process. However, the result is the same - the settings you make are applied and the extra shutter movements do not impact the exposure.

I don't know what kind of photography you do, but I would encourage you to use the viewfinder rather than the LCD panel at the back, for the reason that by putting the camera to your eye you are creating three points of contact - your two hands (one should be under the lens supporting the camera, while the other is on the controls) with your elbows tucked into your sides. Using an LCD means you are holding the camera away from your body, creating an unstable cantilever that makes it more likely you will get camera shake, especially if you use unstabilized or longer lenses.

Hey All! I have a Canon R6 and one of my favorite features is that when you're looking in live view or the view finder, as you change your ISO, fstop and shutter speed, it shows you in real time what your pictures will look like before you even take the picture. All of a sudden, mine stopped doing that so I have no idea if I clicked a button by accident but I have no idea how to get that back! It's killing me!

Having difficulty with my Nikon D610. I've been to 3 camera stores near me and no luck getting any answers without having to leave it for a long period of time. Or asking me questions like I was dumb. "Did you try to adjust the view finder focus?" "What ISO are you trying to shoot at?" "Did you try wiping the lens clean of dust?".

I have a sigma 35mm 1.4 art lens attached and when I try to shoot a portrait through the view finder, it's not as clear as it should be. When I switch to live mode with the same settings, it shoots as crisp as it should. Anyone have any tips or ideas what could be causing this?

Your mirror could very well be damaged or defective. There is a second mirror flap on the backside of the mirror that steers the image to your autofocus sensor. I would suspect this because your camera focuses fine in liveview which doesn't use that flap.

It looks fine through the view finder but comes out slightly blurry. It will focus but not as well as it does when in live view. I can focus the camera manually through the view finder and it will take a sharp image, but I have bad eyes so that doesn't work too well for me.

I should probably make it more clear lol. When I shoot normal as I would look through the view finder, it is clear when I am looking through the view finder but when I view the image, it is not as clear as it should be. Looking through the view finder, it's clear. It's the image that I take is what I am having a problem with.

I've had problems before with viewfinder AF playing up, check that there isn't any dust on the AF prisms under the mirror, you could use a rocket blower for this, a little dust and the AF system just can't function!
