For a year N Staffs GeekUp has been meeting on the first Wednesday of
the month
at The Lodge in Alsager. Tomorrow [1] will be the last of those
meetings.
We've had an astonishing range of people - old Unix hands, web devs,
artists,
entrepreneurs - turn up, and a surprising number from Alsager itself
(an unsuspecting
hive of new media activity!). Nevertheless, there's been no
"stickiness" to attendance;
meetings haven't appealed enough to bring in a regular crowd, and
numbers
haven't built to a point where arranging speakers was worthwhile.
Thanks to everyone who's come along - travelling from everywhere from
Macclesfield to Stone and Stafford, as well as occasional visits from
Liverpool and Chester. Sadly, I'm having to systematically cut out
a number of regular commitments to meet fresh demands on my time,
and won't be organisaing another Staffordshire Geekup after tomorrow.
If anyone else wants to give up one evening a month to ensure a GeekUp
for the region please step forward - it doesn't have to be in Alsager,
of
course. Stoke-on-Trent might be a better bet (and there it could be a
help to the stalled Potteries Hackspace). The region struggles to
provide
its own tech identity in the face of near neighbours Manchester and
Birmingham, but there's plenty going on, and the right group meeting
could bring all sorts of people together :-)
So long, and thanks for all the beer [2] ;-)

[2] Teh Interweb is strangely devoid of accounts of The Lodge's
wonderful real ale, such as
