Did y'all know that Kerry released an album back in August named Q.A.R.? Just happened to find it on Amazon Prime Music. Has different singers for the songs. Has John Elefante, a remake of "Nobody's Home" sung by a woman, and called "Everyone's Home." His nephew sang at least one. (I'm still listening) A remake of "Song Du' Jour" from his Collectors Sedition album. Didn't even know he was making another one after the cantata.

All of the songs are good, but "When You Walk" with Greg X. Volz is the highlight for me.

I bought this cd and a few songs are good, but most of it is boring.
Kerry wrote some amazing stuff back in the day, but once he found god his music to me is not as great, Good but not great,
I dont know why, but he isnt the only one.

While not as great as the 70s I actually like QAR better than the last two Kansas albums.  I think Livgren has written a handful of great songs since finding salvation:  Hold On, Mask of the Great Deceiver, To live for the king…and I think he wrote Play the game tonight…not sure.  But I think like most song writers they have a spurt if genius and the declines.

Kerry has written plenty of excellent material since becoming a Christian. I believe he wrote all of Somewhere To Elsewhere and that is one of my favorite
Kansas albums. He also wrote Cold Grey Morning off of Freaks.

I think the solo stuff is more a matter of arrangements rather than material. Many of us would like them more if they were done more on the Kansas style. I
find Proto-Kaw to be the same way.

I couldn't really get into Proto Kaw, but I think it's great that they were able to get a record deal so many years later. I like most of Kerry's solo work, though most of it doesn't sound much like Kansas.

Play The Game Tonight was written by outside writers, and originally titled "Stay With Me Tonight" - which Kerry, John, Dave (and probably others in the band - Rich is on record saying how much he dislikes "boy/girl" songs) found offensive, so they reworked the lyrics into "Play The Game Tonight."  After Dust and Wayward Son, this might be their highest charting song - anyone??

gp

p.s. - I think I read this in Kerry's "Seeds of Change", but can't recall for sure....  I also recall that when Phil/John were on Rockline when VC was released, they answered a question that PTGT was written by "Kerry, John, and a couple other guys..." - with no more detail of who those "other guys" were, though they are listed in the credits.

This marks the first appearance of new Kansas lead singer John Elefante, who replaced Steve Walsh. Vinyl Confessions was also the last album that violinist Robby Steinhardt played on until 1997. The album marked guitarist/Keyboardist Kerry Livgren and Bassist Dave Hope's new found Christianity, and the result was more of a Contemporary Christian sound.

There is a difference between composing for a rehearsed band and, having to explain to guest musicians in the studio what they should play.

The band members bring in ideas that are otherwise simply not there.

The drummer alone has an enormous influence on the dynamics and drama of a composition.

Yes, and the "Kansas filter" is pretty well known....  So not surprising that KLs solo compositions have a different "look and feel".  ;-)

Ekseption and Focus have been pretty popular in the 1970s.

Jan Akkerman of Focus was rated as being among worlds top guitarists.

He said he dismissed him in 1976 and has not spoken to him since.
That was it.
Then he gave me and my wife flute lessons in a champagne glass !!

Focus continued with Philip Catherine – also 1st class (jazz) guitarist then.

Thijs blew a melody in a champagne glass??

He’s incredible.

Focus played on Cruise to the Edge?

Thijs is a classical trained musician. And he can rock the Hammond, too.

Jan Akkerman is on his 75th Birthday Tour in Germany currently…..
