Hi everyone.

Here in the UK, I’m really enjoying the new album, but something else has appeared as of July 31, namely “Kansas: Beyond The Illusion (The 1980 New York Broadcast Remastered)”.  It’s only on streaming (Spotify for me) and is on Amazon UK for streaming and download (£3.49!)

It appears to be a radio broadcast of one of the following two dates:

https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/kansas/1980/the-palladium-new-york-ny-5bc2a7a4.html

https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/kansas/1980/the-palladium-new-york-ny-43d38b33.html

I’m assuming that as a broadcast it’s well bootlegged, but it’s new to me, and sounds good.  Steve is in great voice and the band are tight as ever.

It’s notable for having seven consecutive songs from Audio Visions, which I hope didn’t cause a steady exodus to the bar as they sound full of energy.  (The songs not played are Curtain Of Iron, No Room For A Stranger and Back Door.)  And also, interestingly, there’s a song each from Steve and Kerry’s previous solo albums, You Think You’ve Got It Made and Mask Of The Great Deceiver.  It’s great to hear band versions of these.

I hope you’re all keeping well!

Nick Barker, in Manchester, England.

Hello Nick (and everyone else),

This same show was commercially released on CD a few years ago under the title "Carry On For No Return". According to the liner notes in my CD it was recorded 20th November 1980 at The Palladium, NYC. Kinda odd because although this a show from the AV tour the cover art looks like an outtake from the Monolith photo shoot; even weirder is that back cover is a photo of the 2 Steves (Morse, Walsh) which obviously came much later.

Here is the Discogs entry:

According to the set list you posted, Portrait and COWS closed the show but both are omitted from my CD. Despite this the CD is still 83 minutes long, which in itself is interesting because the maximum playing time of a standard, so-called Red Book CD is only supposed to be 79:57!

Cheers,
Owen in Calgary, Canada
