RobertDennis Buckway, Age 67 passed away peacefully surrounded by family in his home in Farmington, Utah, on September 12, 2023. Robert was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in April, 2022, and fought all the way to the end. He was born in Boise, Idaho, September 6, 1956, to George Jacob Buckway and Patricia Lorene Shaw. Bob was an amazing husband, father, and grandfather.

Bob was an excellent husband, father, brother, and friend. He loved his family and there was nothing more important than his family to him. He loved people and he loved to help those he loved. He would give you all he could. He was a little rough around the edges but was one of the most loving and caring people around. He especially loved his 12 grandchildren. He loved to spend time with them and help them learn about the outdoors. He loved to spoil them and looked forward to spending time with them.

Bob was a skillful carpenter by trade. He started out at a young age working as a framer and then learned to do finish carpentry. One day he was asked by his boss if he could build staircases. Bob said confidently "yes I can" without really knowing how to build staircases. He started to learn what would become his craft, building beautiful staircases. Bob was a successful small business owner and ran his construction business. Bob worked very hard to provide for his wife and kids. He worked all the way up to his diagnosis and had to be pulled off the job. Bob was able to do anything he put his mind to, he had a variety of skill sets. He also started a layout boat building business, which bloomed into his real passion for building airboats. He designed and built several small airboats in his free time.

He married the love of his life, Jann Fawson Buckway, August 26, 2000. They met at a singles dance in Salt Lake City. They loved to go camping, fishing, and just spending time with each other. He loved to make Jann laugh and would go to great lengths to get her to laugh. They were each other's best friend and having Jann in his live was one of the best things to happen to Bob.

Bob was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt, especially archery elk, duck, and goose hunting. He loved to fish both out of the boat and on the ice. He learned to chase the big lake trout at Flaming Gorge and was successful. He loved to be out in the boat fishing for hours or in the airboat out in the marsh. He loved to be in the mountains and felt closest to God in the mountains.

Se eu fosse um carpinteiro

If I were a carpenter

E voc uma dama

And you were a lady

Voc casaria comigo de qualquer maneira?

Would you marry me anyway?

Voc teria o meu filho?

Would you have my baby?

Se funileiro fosse o meu ofcio

If a tinker were my trade

Voc ainda me encontraria?

Would you still find me?

Carregando as panelas que eu fiz

Carrying the pots I made

Seguindo atrs de mim?

Following behind me?

Se eu trabalhasse com minhas mos na madeira

If I worked my hands in wood

Voc ainda me amaria?

Would you still love me?

Me responda, amor: Sim, eu amaria

Answer me babe: Yes I would

Eu te colocaria acima de mim

I'll put you above me

Se moleiro fosse o meu ofcio

If I were a miller were my trade

Em uma roda de moinho

At a mill wheel grinding

Voc perderia a sua caixa de cor

Would you miss your color box

E os seus sapatos macios brilhantes?

And your soft shoe shining?

The New Mexico Tech Board of Regents convened at 1:35 p.m., with Board of Regents Chairman Richard N. Carpenter presiding. Other Board members present were Regent Jerry Armijo, Regent Deborah Peacock, Regent Abe Silver and Student Regent Omar Soliman. University administrators, staff, and guests who were also present included:

Approval of Agenda: Regent Silver moved to approve the Agenda as presented, followed by a second from Regent Soliman. The motion passed unanimously. It was noted by Chairman Carpenter that reports from the N.M. Tech Foundation and Faculty Senate would be made under Announcements.

Sabbatical Leaves. V.P. Gerity reported that sabbatical leaves had been granted for three faculty members: Dr. Lisa Young, Physics Department; and Dr. Sue Dunston and Dr. Doug Dunston, CLASS Department. Their classes will be covered by their colleagues and part-time instructors.

The President said he made it clear to members of the Faculty Senate at their last meeting that he was willing to work with them in dealing with policies and other issues. In his report, Faculty Senate Chair Richard Sonnenfeld noted that his role as a liaison between faculty and the Board already has had a positive effect on morale. Dr. Sonnenfeld noted that his role is to summarize Board activities, and to attempt to provide answers to any questions asked. In thanking Dr. Sonnenfeld for his report, Chairman Carpenter cited the opportunity for Faculty Senate issues to be addressed at the Board level.

Degree Conferrals for October 2012. Dr. Gerity reported that four Bachelor of Science degrees, two Master of Science, and one Master of Science for Teachers were conferred by New Mexico Tech in October to six students, one of whom earned two Bachelor of Science diplomas.

Quarterly Financial Ending September 2012. The President presented to the Board for approval the financial report for the first quarter of FY13, as required by the Department of Higher Education. The report includes comparison of operating and plant fund budgets, comparison of year-to-date activities, statement of net assets, statement of cash flow and a reconciliation of budget numbers to GAAP. Regent Silver moved to approve the quarterly report. Regent Armijo seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

Langmuir Laboratory Budget. President Lpez explained that the Langmuir Laboratory budget is a quasi-endowment requiring Board approval and a budget adjustment. Regent Armijo so moved, followed by a second by Regent Peacock. The motion passed unanimously. During discussion, it was noted that the budget includes $180,839 in carry-forward funds and $91,268 in new funds, totaling $272,107. An oversight committee reviewed the Langmuir budget and had recommended approval, noted the President, adding that all other University endowments are invested through the Investment Council. Since Langmuir came in after other endowment funds, they are invested separately. Investments are very conservative, he added. The President agreed to follow up on a suggestion made by Chairman Carpenter to develop a policy on how lab funds should be handled. Mr. Marquez offered to work with Mr. Adams to develop a draft investment policy for later consideration.
