I don't have a laptop with thunderbolt to try myself as its still old enough (4 years) to have ExpressCard. But I am concered that when I do upgrade I will have very limited choice in ExpressCard laptops. It suits me doing development on my laptop and then deploying to PCs in production.
However none of the Thunderbolt ports are working. My NUC is unable to detect any USB-C memory sticks and my DELL Monitor which has thunderbolt connection is unable to detect any video being output from the NUC thunderbolt ports. The monitor/thunderbolt cable are good as my Macbook Pro works fine. I have also checked Thunderbolt is enabled in the NUC BIOS.
Update - the same ethernet cable directly connected to thunderbolt port via "dongle" works as expected in Yosemite, without changing anything else. The bug seems to be with Yosemite's ability to detect the ethernet jack in the monitor itself through the thunderbolt connector. perhaps a firmware update is needed?
I have the same problem with the display Ethernet connection. I spent $29 on an apple help telephone call today without any resolution other than advice to take the display into the apple store for repair! In addition to the Ethernet issue, there is no power coming through the lightning connection to my macbook pro so I have to connect my magsafe power cord to the laptop. What happened to Apple reliability and backing of its products and software! I am very disappointed to have purchased three (3) thunderbolt displays for my macbook at different sites and have such basic functions fail without supported remedy.
First, I have been unable to install thunderbolt 1.2 firmware update for the past month from my MacBook Pro Retina. I tried installing from my old MacBook Pro after I recently updated its operating system and apps. It worked! I was able to install the firmware.
Another problem I discovered yesterday was that the ethernet port from the thunderbolt would not connect to Ethernet. It would connect if I used a lighting port to Ethernet adapter from the lightning port on the Thunderbolt display but still would not connect if I just connected the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the thunderbolt (it worked from the old MacBook).
So, I looked at the IP address indicated when the old macbook connected through the Ethernet and MANUALLY entered that IP address into the new MacBook Retinal thunderbolt Ethernet setup and it connected! It has to be some Yosemite software glitch.
This solved my problem. Over the weekend, I got tired of having to remind my laptop that I was home and created two new locations in Network Preferences. Somehow, that confused my MacBook Pro. So, I deleted my "Home" and "Work" locations and stuck with Automatic. The Ethernet via the thunderbolt display started working again.
If you see it, your half way there to resolution. If you don't see it, you may have a thunderbolt bus issue or your adapter could be bad.
This post is for those that see it, but cannot get the device to show up (auto detect) in the Network Preferences part of System Preferences.
Let's start with the obvious, the UAD-2 Satellite is a wonderfully engineered piece of hardware. The unboxing experience is pleasant and the provided imagery gives you a brief hint of heritage, further adding to the assurance of a good purchase. The unit itself is sturdy, metal, and has a girthy power switch that imparts a satisfying clink when engaged. I opted for the Octo thunderbolt 3 interface which allows daisy chaining from my Mac mini to the satellite and then to my Apollo. After authorizing plugins you're off to work. The 8 SHARC chips allow you to employ many more time-based effects and plugins that may have been used sparingly-- Neve 88rs this means you. If you are working in the box and want to have a complete console experience, you may need two.
Summary
I have been experiencing issues with my thunderbolt dock. Sometimes, the dock stops working and the computer no longer recognizes any USB devices or monitors connected to it.
On my previous Macbook Pro 16in Intel (Monterrey) and before, have always had my computer connected to OWC thunderbolt dock, and thunderbolt usb-c 10g ethernet attached to the dock getting me about 1.7gbps.
On the new M1 MacBook Pro 14 (Monterrey - Stable version shipped with), it still works but now in Preferences > Network > Thunderbolt Bridge shows as not connected (even though it is). The problem here, is even though I have that set to override wifi, wifi appears first in the list and thus uses the wifi because it thinks the ethernet isn't connected. If I disable wifi, then thunderbolt bridge is on top, still says not connected, but able to get full ethernet speeds. But then when I unplug and want to use wifi i have to manually re-enable wifi.
