Epsiodeusers are here because they get to make decisions in the stories they read. But I understand the want to write your own story without outside interference. A happy compromise might be to only include outfit choices. That way you can write your own story with one definitive storyline but still give the readers choices.
First question, is this your first story? I found when I started, it was a little difficult to figure out the whole choices coding thing. I stuck to dressing games and simple choices provided in the script template by Episode. I admit most readers like complicated choices (at least in my experience), so they were probably disappointed that I had these type of choices. Once I felt more confident and experienced in doing the choices coding, I added more complex choices and had more choices available in my stories. My recommendation is not to rush to publish right away and give yourself time to learn the language of the coding and become more comfortable with it. You can always ask for help on this forum page. There are a lot of people who are good with that.
I only just realised that episodes do often range from being games to novels! I definitely get where your coming from with the mindset of the reader vs the mindset of that character!
Thanks for your opinion as well as that unexpected enlightenment!
On the other hand, if you would like to write choices in a guided narrative, I would just suggest making choices that will allow readers to view different scenes depending on what they chose. No long-term branching impact really. Just something that gives you new insights into the story. The trick with this is that you gotta be careful that readers are still given any crucial information they must know in all the branches.
people have diffrent opinions. personally I dont like stories with out choices. it has to be a really good story for me to read it. because the choices is why I am here. the choices dont need to have a big pimpact on the story (honestly most choices dosent) but what I hate more than no choices. is the its actually not a choice choice. it can be simple stuff like go left or right.
Where it goes. os sorry you pick wrong now you to go back and pick the other choice. I pick going to the gym instead of the cafe. ups look like the gym is closed now you have to go to the cafe anyway.
In The Crown and the Flame, diamond unlocks buy you new weapons, give you ally and combat advantages, and allow you to spare another character from being killed. If you choose not to pay real-world currency to save his life, you get a couple of beats of his begging for mercy and tragic unhappiness before you move on with the story.
Episodes is not mending from their diamond devouring ways. What frustrates me is you get 1! 1 diamond for completing a chapter/book! Why? And the cheapest diamond option is 19.
Choices have redeemed themselves though. 2 diamonds after completing a chapter and 15 for a book. You also get an extra for watching an add. So choices is so much better.
Sadly, even if one launched a product that was better in writing and production values than something like Choices, it would stand no chance of eclipsing it without resorting to similarly addiction-based strategies.
I have recently beaten Until Dawn for the first time and would like to go back and get the rest of the trophies. Unfortunately, I pulled down an outdated save file from the cloud which was near the beginning, so I didn't get a chance to try the Episode Select feature for myself.
I plan to play this game two more times, a perfect file and no-survivor file, but I'm having trouble deciding which to play first now that I have deleted my previous save. I understand that, after unlocking Episode Select, I will lose my collectibles if and only if I select New Game, but I am concerned about how Episode Select will affect my choices.
If I use Episode Select to play from the very beginning until the very end, will my choices from my first playthrough be overwritten or will subsequent uses of Episode Select still fall back on my first choices?
The first time you beat the game the choices you made during that playthrough become your "canon" and make up your episode select. Anytime you use the Episode Select to skip around, the game uses the choices from the canon playthrough to fill in the gaps.
Even if you use episode select to start in the prologue and play all the way to chapter 10 it will not change your "canon". The only way to change it is to actually use the new game feature, which will wipe your collectibles and episode select away.
Note that episode select always loads all of your canon choices before the episode you start in. This means if you want to change a choice in chapter 3 to see how it affects chapter 5 you have to play through 3, 4, and 5 again. If you just play through 3, then jump to 5, it will load your original choices and you will not see the change.
Based on my experiences of playing Episode Select from Chapter 3 all the way through, and Chapter 10 until the end, I believe the only way Episode Select will alter your initial results is if you do it from Chapter 10.
The Story Journal is a tab on the hero panel that tracks and displays the character's progress through the narrative of Guild Wars 2. The journal has section for the personal story, expansions, and each season of the Living World. Each section is further divided into chapters and episodes for the personal story and Living World respectively. Each chapter or episode is further divided into a series of quests or parts that are completed sequentially in instances and the open world.
To switch between stories or to replay an episode, simply select the story or episode in the journal. Incomplete stories will show a button to "Switch to this story," while completed episodes will show a button to "Replay this episode." These actions will replace your character's currently active story, and you will lose any progress you had made in the current chapter of that story. Please note the Personal story can not be replayed.
While replaying episodes, you can progress through the episode as if you were playing it for the first time, following the objectives indicated by the green star map icon. Certain chapters that include achievements will always be available directly through a purple star icon for characters that have already finished the episode at least once, allowing you to replay only the necessary part without the whole story. Several instances also offer direct checkpoints, both for replaying achievements and for a case of disconnecting.
At character creation the player can choose different biographical information which will change aspects of what occurs during the story. This might include the social status of the character, their belief, or other things. Each race has different choices for their biographical information. The profession chosen will also have a minor effect.
The choices made throughout the game will affect the appearance and services in the character's home instance as they progress through the story. The choices will be recorded in each character's individualized Story Journal. Players following the same storyline who assist you in yours can choose to accept the same outcome or replay the mission to make their own choices.
All missions reward experience and coin, but other rewards vary depending on story progression. All missions will have a similar selection of rewards at their equivalent points of the story for the same profession regardless or race or story choices. Here are some examples of such rewards:
My Story follows the character through the personal story of Guild Wars 2. The story details the humble beginnings as a local hero to commander of the Pact in the fight against Zhaitan. The story is split into eight chapters. The story as a whole must be played through in order, and no part of the story can be replayed.
The first three chapters deal with the character's early rise into renown, significant portions of which are based on choices made in your character's biography, ending with your character joining one of the three orders: the Vigil, the Durmand Priory or the Order of Whispers. These three chapters' names in the Story Journal change dependent on the character's race.
Chapters 4-6 follows your character's progress through the ranks of their chosen order. During these chapters, your character will recruit one of the minor races to fight against Zhaitan and participate in the major battles on Claw Island.
Season 1 begins the tale of Tyria after the defeat of Zhaitan, and deals primarily with Scarlet Briar and the alliances she formed between the various hostile factions of Tyria. Her plans culminate in an attack on Lion's Arch, with the intent of disturbing a major ley line which lies underneath the city, in order to complete the awakening of the Elder Dragon Mordremoth.
The story journal was introduced after first season was complete and it is not available in the journal in its original form. ArenaNet has announced plans to add the season back into the game as a series of episodes in the story journal. The re-implementation process of Season 1 started in April 2022 and ended in November 2022. Remembering Scarlet's War was a short recap of the major events from Living World Season 1 and was intended as a transition from the Personal story to Living World Season 2 while Living World Season 1 was not available.
The first expansion, Heart of Thorns, starts where Living World Season 2 left off, and follows the Commander's trek through the Heart of Maguuma to find missing members of Destiny's Edge, tracking Caithe and Glint's Egg, and the fight against Mordremoth. To complete the Heart of Thorns expansion storyline, the following masteries need to be trained: Glider Basics, Bouncing Mushroom, Exalted Markings, Updraft Use, and Nuhoch Hunting.
Season 3 begins with a memorial to Eir Stegalkin and the return of the White Mantle. While the Commander investigates Minister Caudecus's disappearance, they are met with the return of the mursaat Lazarus and the rising activity of multiple Elder Dragons.
