So we have OS Fabs in development in Austin and at Factor e Farm. NYCResistor? Factor e Farm is in itself the Triple Alliance in the making! Yet, I want to complement these groups by using what we already have, thus, step into simpler terrain: food, indoors or outdoors. As I see it, moving further with the specific initiatives we're working starts with a good meal in an environment that embodies our ideals. If anything, learners of history will find a display of information not related to their intended studies!
Hacking code and hardware is important, we need to reverse engineer and open source stuff and what makes the stuff in our lives to reduce costs toward zero, but we also need to open source the basics: food and the places we inhabit. If we can make a place to stay and food with no strings attached universal, the rest will by default follow.
Now my task in this area is to find these social networks that may be attracted to the idea of a Cafe commons. Its just a matter of finding the groups that are doing this sort of stuff: community/DIY/gift economy/p2p/open source. Those terms can be spared and made as simply as this: the types that would rather not use money, but if necessary, make frugal use of it. All groups that presently work in that general format will be attracted to the proposal to be developed.
Nathan, this is fascinating stuff... Do you have any stories about where this approach is being applied? I am interested to hear stories of people's experience with it. That is the next step to getting it spread!
So where can we find these stories?
Freegans! Of course!
I recently joined the Freegan World discussion list to see where these Cafes are.
This is a resource for your local Cafe Fridge
