Dear friends,
We just finished a month of all three
Post Natyam
members in the same
city! A rare opportunity which we enjoyed tremendously. Though we did
not perform together, we spent a lot of time
in the studio together,
coming up with new work (a trio and a duet), and teaching each other
solos. We had fun transforming Shyamala's house into

2. Workshop
An independent dance
journey back to the present
Weekend
Dance workshop with acclaimed performer/choreographer from India
ANITA
RATNAM
Over the two day intensive session
dancers will learn the ancient Indian theatrical modes of temple ritual
hand gestures (Arayer Sevai), new interpretations of classical Bharatanatyam
etudes, martial art energy, vocalization and chanting as well as the creation
of independent movement phrases that evolve out of classical Indian dance
training and life experience. Working for six hours a day in two
sessions per day, the workshop will culminate in a new 3 to 4 minute choreography
taught from Anita Ratnam's repertoire.
Ratnam's style of performance is
called NEO BHARATAM. Using her training in classical dance forms, acting,
music, television and film, Ratnam has evolved a performance style that
is theatrical and visually compelling. Drawing extensively from her own
life, Ratnam creates from an infinite wellspring of personal anecdotes
and memoirs. Workshop participants will learn how to include dreams and
personal philosophies into material for choreography – all framed into
a pattern that can refresh young choreographers and stimulate the imagination.
Participants will be introduced to the clues and signifiers of vocal pneumonics
where the dancers give voice themselves to the soundscape of the choreography.
NO beginners. Dance and performance
experience a must.
Other movement styles like yoga
and gymnastic and modern dance students are also welcome. A knowledge of
South Asian dance will be very helpful.
Only 10 to 12 students for the
entire session permitted.
