6. Munich: Call for Works: artsensAsian
Deadline: 15 March 2006
Munich Masala (www.munichmasala.de), in collaboration with Post Natyam ( www.postnatyam.net), is planning to produce an event series which aims to support and present the work of artists of South Asian origin (initially primarily South Asians with roots in Germany).
While there is no homogenous definition for this community, and each artist's self-definition is unique, we might find that there are communalities that connect us. Without doubt, however, it will be exciting to share our work and discover the different ways we define ourselves as artists and South Asians and how those self-definitions shape our art.
In particular, we
are looking for people working in
Dance, Theater, Comedy, Film, Literature, Visual Arts, and Music
who are interested
to participate in an event in Munich on October 1, 2006
There will be two sections of the event:
1) We
will invite artists who have been active at a professional level for several
years, to contribute presentations of approximately 30 minutes. This part of
the program will be curated by invitation only.
2) We also want to provide a forum for "newcomers" to present 10 minutes of their work.
The event will be concluded with a party featuring Asian DJs from across Germany.
If you are
interested in actively participating in art sensAsian 2006, please send us the
following:
- a
10-minute-video (a simple live video of a performance or literature reading),
or a small visual arts portfolio. If you would like your material returned to
you, please include a stamped return envelope.
- A
short bio and artistic statement (no more than one page)
There are no
prescriptions in terms of the content of the work, but it would be great if it
was a reflection of your diasporic South Asian life.
DEADLINE (extended): 15 March 2006
We would like to produce art sensAsian annually, so please feel free to send us your material even after the deadline. We will consider your submission for the following year, or in case there are any changes in the programming for 2006.
Please send your
material to:

7. Kolkata: DANCE MATTERS - 2 day symposium
Deadline: March 30, 2006
The School of Media, Communication and Culture at Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India is pleased to announce a two-day symposium titled Dance Matters on August 10-11 2006. This symposium proposes to bring to the forefront innovative approaches that have placed dance at the center of scholarly research on body, ritual, culture, identity, history, gender, and power. Selected papers from the symposium will be published in a book.
Dance is a vital aspect of expressive culture. It embodies the cultural experience and expression of a particular collective identity. Notions of culture, identity, and history are continually re-invented through dance. Indian dance forms have emerged as an important critical lens to analyze narratives of nationalism, transnationalism, women's bodies, and postcolonial politics. Scholarly research on Indian dance forms has spanned disciplines such as Anthropology, Culture studies, Performance studies, Art history, Postcolonial and Feminist studies. The recent formulation of Dance studies as an academic discipline is a result of the increased circulation of various dance forms in the international scholarly and art-culture circuits. This conference will bring scholars and practitioners together on the same platform to evaluate the status of Indian dance forms (ranging from classical, to folk, to Bollywood) in shaping current discourses on culture, tradition, history, identity, human rights and more. The topics to be covered include
¤ Tradition and Globalization
¤ Religion and Culture
¤ Identity and Hybridity
¤ Gender and Sexuality
¤ Media and Popular Culture
¤ Ethnography and Audience
¤ Dance and Social justice
¤ Ritual and Aesthetics
Please send a brief
abstract (350 words) including a title, name, address, email, phone number and
institutional affiliation by March 30, 2006. Submit abstracts and direct
queries to
