WhenThe Conjuring was released in 2013, it kick-started a popular new horror franchise and was a big hit. The movie is still beloved by fans of the genre today, earning an 83% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing over $300 million worldwide. And critics enjoyed it too, with The Conjuring sitting at 86% on the Tomatometer.
The Conjuring franchise has eight films so far. While they aren't all great, horror fans enjoy visiting the world of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren and the incredibly eerie doll Annabelle. The ending of The Conjuring sets up the rest of the horror franchise and proves that the Warrens are intelligent experts in the world of demons, evil spirits, and haunted houses.
While not all of The Conjuring movies are equally great, the horror franchise remains one of the most popular. Each movie follows paranormal investigators named Ed and Lorraine Warren (played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) as they try to rid homes of evil spirits. Each movie focuses on a different time period.
The Conjuring franchise is made up of several films about the Warrens but also includes some spin-offs that focus on Annabelle, the evil doll with real-life inspiration. Annabelle has become one of the most recognizable figures in the horror genre and for good reason. Her rosy cheeks and eerie look in her eyes, along with her incredible powers, make her a real force to be reckoned with.
In The Conjuring, the Warrens try to help Carolyn Perron (Lili Taylor) as she realizes that she lives in a haunted house. This movie is also important and memorable because it introduces Annabelle. The Conjuring 2 was released in 2016 and tells a similar story to the first one. Some horror sequels are better than the original and that might not be true of The Conjuring 2. But fans of the original movie enjoy the chance to revisit the same creepy supernatural world.
In Annabelle, which was released in 2014, John (Ward Horton) and Mia (Annabelle Wallis) are starting their family when the evil doll begins affecting them. There are two more Annabelle movies: Annabelle: Creation which was released in 2017 and focuses on young orphans in a home and Annabelle Come Home which was released in 2019 and is about the Warrens's daughter Judy (McKenna Grace).
The fifth movie in The Conjuring universe, The Nun, was released in 2018 and serves as a prequel to The Conjuring 2, telling the story of Saint Cartha's monastery in the 1950s. This isn't considered the best film in the franchise but does offer some background that fans might find interesting.
Finally, the most recent movie in The Conjuring franchise is The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, which was released in 2021. Once again, it focuses on the Warrens. While some horror franchises have deep lore, the events of The Conjuring franchise are much easier to keep track of.
In The Conjuring ending, the evil demon Bathsheba hurts Judy Warren (Sterling Jerins). The Warrens understand exactly what's going on and spring into action. Lorraine says that Bathsheba will murder the Perron's daughter Carolyn unless they keep her inside. Ed tries to rid Carolyn of the demon and Lorraine helps him out.
When Ed sends Bathsheba to hell where he belongs, audiences learn that Ed and Lorraine keep objects from the families that they work with and they leave them in a room in their home. Ed takes the Perron family's creepy music box. The movie's final image is the music box playing.
The Conjuring ending is smart and leads into the sequel. It's clear that the Warrens, who are based on the real-life couple, will never stop hearing from families who want them to look into their haunted houses. While the character development in The Conjuring franchise isn't as strong as in other horror movies, Ed and Lorraine do function as effective and powerful main characters. They care about their daughter, each other, and trying to help people, and that makes them compelling to follow along with.
The Conjuring has many terrifying villains and the ending of The Conjuring is definitely chilling. It proves that even though the Warrens do their best to get rid of demons and spirits, they can't control everything. And sometimes, there is still evil lurking somewhere.
Taking place in Harrisville, Rhode Island, in 1971, The Conjuring centers on the Perron family as they move into a new home in the country and face unimaginable terrors by the movie's ending. As the children and their mother, Carolyn (Lili Taylor), begin to experience signs of demonic disturbances, she calls upon paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) for help. Eventually, Carolyn is completely overtaken by an evil spirit known as Bathsheba, who was once a devil-worshipping witch who cursed anyone trying to take her land.
Directed by James Wan and written by Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes, the movie is well-known for launching one of cinema's biggest modern horror franchises, The Conjuring Universe. The end of the horror film revolves around a scary and suspenseful exorcism as a possessed Carolyn attempts to murder her two youngest kids. Ed and Lorraine, with some assistance, manage to help the matriarch rid herself of Bathsheba and save the family from certain doom. As the Warrens return home to their daughter Judy, it's clear this is only the beginning of the family's story.
At the beginning of the film, the Warrens meet with a trio of young adults needing assistance with a possessed doll named Annabelle. The paranormal investigators explain, however, that Annabelle was never possessed; the doll was a conduit for a demonic entity. This moment is called back on when young Judy Warren finds herself locked in a dark room with Annabelle sitting on a woman's lap in a rocking chair. The demon terrorizing the Perrons has now latched onto the Warrens and is targeting their daughter. Annabelle being used by another demon suggests how touched by evil the doll is.
Fans of The Conjuring Universe have learned from multiple films that Annabelle is not an ordinary object being manipulated by spirits and demons. The Warrens had an entire room housing allegedly haunted items, yet the evil spirit Bathsheba in The Conjuringchooses Annabelle to scare Judy. The story of Annabelle all started with a young dead girl and a demon tricking her grieving parents. Dark spirits have been attracted to the doll as a conduit before, and death usually follows it. Besides being a good way to scare the audience, Annabelle is a tainted vessel able to channel these entities.
Christine and April are the youngest of the Perron family. April is seemingly more sensitive to the spirits of the house than the rest of the family, as she is able to see and befriend the ghost of Rory, a boy who was murdered by his mother years prior. Despite the daughters all experiencing the demon's presence in the house at one point or another, Christine and April seem to be targeted heavily during the movie. When a fully possessed Carolyn takes the two girls back to the Perron home to kill them, it harkens back to Bathsheba's M.O.
The movie establishes the evil spirit's pattern of possessing mothers and forcing them to kill their young children. This all stems from when the witch cursed anyone attempting to take her land before she took her own life. The murdered kids have all been very young, implying the witch's demonic spirit prefers younger sacrifices (considering she killed her baby at only a few days old). With this being Bathsheba's preference for punishing those who dared move onto what was once her land, it makes sense that Carolyn selected Christine and April to be sacrificed.
Ed screams at Bathsheba that he condemns her back to Hell. Still, it's not until Lorraine encourages Carolyn to fight the entity from the inside, reminding her of the family day at the beach and her love, that the mother is able to rid herself of the possession. The presence of faith is a core theme of The Conjuring movies, especially because of the Warrens' strong belief system. However, the movie takes the time to explore family bonds and relationships built on love in between the horror-filled moments, setting up the way the ending plays out.
One example is the conversation between Lorraine and Carolyn about the photo the Perron family took at the beach. It was a perfect day for the loving family and the specific moment Lorraine brings up to Carolyn when she's trying to help her break free from Bathsheba. What made the day so special was not only how happy they all were, but a memory of love and joy Carolyn cherishes. Those feelings, in addition to how hard she was willing to fight back to prevent herself from killing April, were all rooted in her love for her children.
The movie not only introduced the fan-favorite Annabelle doll, but the end also teased the vast, frightening world that would be possible to explore in future installments. The final sequence is set in the Warrens' occult museum of cursed items that were all allegedly linked to various hauntings and possessions. By the time the credits roll, there is a feeling that the story of the Warrens is nowhere near over, and there will be more trinkets to add to the haunted gallery.
Beyond the scares, the true meaning of The Conjuring ending is about sticking together and not facing your demons alone. An ongoing storyline throughout the movie is about Lorraine getting her footing back after experiencing a terrifying premonition during a previous exorcism and Ed protectively trying to remove her from the danger. Lorraine rejects his wishes, determined to face Bathsheba and save Carolyn as partners. When the Warrens team up and work together, they are at their strongest and able to defeat the worst of the worst.
Updated by Timothy Blake Donohoo on July 1, 2024: Annabelle: Creation was the second movie in the Annabelle trilogy, which itself was a subseries in the Conjuring Universe. Despite this, the movie that was essentially "Annabelle 2" was actually a prequel set before the first movie. Annabelle: Creation's ending led directly into the events of the main Conjuring movies. These films are now set to end, making a rewatch of Annabelle and its sequels more important than ever.
