Hi,
Is there a free PostgreSQL or PostGIS environment online or in the cloud allowing beginners to access the PostgreSQL and PostGIS server for learning purposes with the possibility of storing our own dataset?

Regards,

I have a system at home I could set up an account for you to play with, no guarantees, etc. if that meets your immediate needs.

If you wanted something with some assurances of server/data security I think it likely you'll need to pay for the privilege.

There is a local (in New Zealand) provider that offers a nice service with good support (in my experience anyway). I don't know how the pricing compares with others:

At about $NZ25 per month for a minimal system, that could be a cheap way to start, but you would need to scale up to support multiple users with significant data volumes.

This article may be of interest:

I would also suggest that if you just want to try it out, any cheap x64 computer with 1Gb of memory or so will happily run a Linux setup (very easy to build) with Postgres/Postgis installed. The deployment process typically takes me about 20 minutes, I'm happy to help you through that if you want.

Cheers,

Brent Wood

Hi Alex and Brent,

Thank you all for your responses. Alex I think CrunchyData is the reference for PostGIS implementation. However, I don't know if it is possible to store personal data in it???
Brent, I would consider your offer if it does not matter for you. Let .

The Crunchy Playground allows experimenting with Postgres and PostGIS, but it runs in a browser only, and doesn't persist data.

Crunchy has the Bridge offering, which is a hosted service (PAAS) to run Postgres on the major cloud providers.  It's cost-effective, but not free.

Hi Martin,
Yes Crunchy Playground is ideal for experimenting with PostgreSQL and PostGIS as it's not persistent. However I should consider Bridge offering in the future. I was not aware that you could subscribe for only $10 per month.
Thank you for the tip.
