On Thurs, Feb 21st, join Before It Starts.org - Keep Tar Sands and Oil Shale Mining Out of the USA <https://www.facebook.com/beforeitstarts/events> and a host of other organizations in welcoming to Utah, indigenous elder, Francois Paulette, former Chief of Smith's Landing First Nation who has been a leader in his community's struggle to stop the largest industrial project on the planet--the tar sands mines of Athabasca, Canada.
Join a flash mob round dance @ 5:00 PM in the Utah Capitol rotunda to support of the Idle No More movement, an indigenous movement for tribal sovereignty and protection of the Earth. This round dance will be in special honor of Elder Francois Paulette, who has been defending his people's land and the whole earth for decades.
After the round dance, Paulette will join us at the SLC Main Library Conference Room B @6:30 PM to view and discuss the film, The Tipping Point, which features his peoples' struggle against environmental poisons and destruction due to Canadian tar sands. He is here to give a warning to the people of Utah about tar sands and what it has done to his community.
With humility and gratitude, in recognition of the people whose lands we live on, we affirm our solidarity with the sovereign indigenous nations of Canada and their rejection of the laws that have dispossessed them of their lands, destroyed their natural resources, suppressed their customs and attempted to assimilate their diverse native cultures.
We encourage you to bring signs to the round dance to show the leaders of the state that native peoples demand respect and sovereignty. Bring your drums and singing voices!
Special thanks to Decolonize Salt Lake City, First Unitarian Church Environmental Ministry, Peaceful Uprising <http://peacefuluprising.org/> , and a growing number of people for helping to organize this event.
**The Capitol Preservation Board has been notified of this event and has indicated that it will be permitted as a "free speech event."
