I want to invite you all to join me for the first of a 3-part video & discussion series on The Crash Course. This is a 20-chapter video series created by the former VP of a fortune-300 pharma company name Chris Martenson. Chris had "made it" in terms of the current system, but still was kept up at night with the question, "What kind of a world am I leaving to my children?" This question got under his skin, and--being a trained scientist--he went on to do a huge amount of research to answer it. Eventually, he started giving presentations on the topic, and in 2008 he refined it all into a 3:20 hour video series.

It's the most objective and understandable (yet thorough!) analysis of how the current economic system works, how its design requires exponential growth, and how that growth is colliding with the limits of energy and resources on this planet. I believe this is going to be the defining story of this time period, and having a solid understanding of the predicament from The Crash Course provides a foundation for deciding how we, as communities, are going to transition, adapt and build local resilience through this transformative decade.

Cheers,
Jake

Here is some more information on The Crash Course, if you are curious or want to get a head start:
The Crash Course seeks to provide a foundational understanding of the need for a transition to a local economy and rebuilding community.   Learn how our economy, energy systems and environment face increasing challenges of debt, peak oil and resource scarcity, explore likely implications for the future, and determine appropriate actions to start taking today.
The video series is all available for free online at : http://www.chrismartenson.com/crashcourse
Also consider watching the 38 minute condensed version for an overview before diving into the full 3 hour series: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eidQTDjQ5gw

CLIMATE CHANGE:  Promoting the Energy Revolution We Need
Instructor: Richard Teerlink, a retired high school science teacher, who included generous doses of evolution and environmental science— considered subversive material by some —in all his courses
Dates: Tuesdays, 7-9PM, Oct 11, 20 (Thurs), 25, Nov 8, 22, and Thursdays, 7-9PM, Dec 1, 8, 15
Location:  Room 201, Education Building, First Unitarian Church, 569 S 1300 E, SLC

The fossil fuel industry is the most profitable business in history, and money buys power.  Moving the U.S. economy away from fossil fuels and replacing them with renewable energy sources is a challenge, but we owe it to our children and the survival of civilization to promote this change.  According to Judge Benson, Tim DeChristopher’s offense “wasn’t too bad.”  His unrepentant political activism was the reason for his two-year sentence.  Judge Benson clearly wanted to deter civil disobedience.  How do we take on corporate and political power, overcome fear, misinformation and apathy in the face of such opposition?   I believe the first step in bringing about change is to know the facts, and this course will start you on your way.  The first half of this 8-week course explores the evidence and causes of climate change.  The second half explores the seven most promising sources of renewable energy.  We will meet two hours each week. The plan includes one hour of lecture/discussion, followed with high quality videos and Q and A.  The course will include ideas for subversive but legal projects that bring people together to make trouble for the energy corporations and have fun doing it.
