We are planning an all day, Earth Day event (Monday April 22), and
we can use your help. And believe me when I say it’s going to
take very little of your time. All we are asking for are one or two
simple things: Help us get the word out and participate in a very short
press conference (if possible) in front of the Governor’s
mansion on South State Street. Think Earth Day, the big, black wrought
iron fence in front of the
mansion covered in neatly tied bright, wide blue ribbons with
individually written messages with black markers, and a Facebook page
that continually updates with images. Think of all the homes in your
neighborhood with blue ribbons tied to the front yard trees. Read on,
please!!! Tim
Hey Utah's Leaders -You Forgot Something!!!
Clean Air, Clean Energy
and a Clean Future
WHAT?
Utah
citizens demand a new course for the state with a direct, non-violent
action with clear, visual messages that chart a cleaner, brighter
future.
• Real mass transit, not more freeways
• Move the refineries, not the prison
• Clean energy, not fracking, oil shale, or tar sands
• Keep public lands public
WHY?
• Despite numerous rallies and protests and the harsh spotlight of the international media, Utah leaders did almost nothing about our terrible air pollution.
• Despite a huge outcry of opposition and the advice from legal
scholars, Utah leadership continues to pursue a land grab, wrestling
control of 30 million acres of publicly-owned lands, just
so it can be developed or turned into fossil fuels development zones.
• While many other states are reducing carbon emissions and embracing clean energy, Utah’s leaders continue to ignore the overwhelming science behind the climate crisis.
The Governor and legislative leaders are determined to make Utah the
fossil fuels capitol of the West, promoting tar sands and oil shale,
more fracking for oil and gas, and coal development on sensitive lands,
while ignoring the dirty legacy and the long term risks this poses
to our health, our economy, our land, our forests, our dwindling water
resources and the beauty of this state.
If you want clean air, clean energy, and
a clean future, please help
make it happen
HOW?
Action:
On Earth Day, Monday April 22, starting at 9:00 am and running until 6
pm, we will host an open house in front of the Governor's mansion on
South Temple.
Walk, bike or drive by. Volunteers will be
on the parking strip on South Temple to greet you and help you write a
message to the Governor on wide blue ribbon (symbolizing clean air) and
then tie that ribbon to the wrought iron fence surrounding the mansion.
We want the media, the Governor, and state leaders to see the entire
fence covered with blue ribbons. Come tell the media why this is
important to you!
Press conference at 11:00 am in front of the Governor's mansion explaining to the media why we are doing this.
This will allow local broadcast outlets to run their first
story on the noon newscast, thereby getting more of the word out to the
public that they should come by during their lunch hour, the afternoon
or on their way home from work and tie a ribbon. This will give the
media the incentive to do a follow up story on the evening newscasts, to
show the ribbons on the fence.
Volunteers will have smart phones to
take pictures of visitors and their ribbons, with a close up of the
written message which will be immediately uploaded to our FB page. This
will create the opportunity for the public and the media to witness all
day via computer the growing activity at the event in real time.
What we're asking you to do
1.
Come by the Governor's mansion on South Temple and bring your friends.
Cut two pieces of blue ribbon (provided). Tie one around the
mansion's fence, take one home and tie it around something in your
front yard. This symbolizes your right to clean air, clean energy and a
clean future.
2. Bring a picture of a loved one who has had
medical problems related to pollution: heart disease, lung disease,
stroke, Alzheimer's, cancer, or a poor pregnancy outcome. Tie it to the
fence with the ribbon.
Outreach for community involvement
will start immediately with notices to all advocacy groups, the
immediate establishment of a FB page, organizational alerts, and
pre-press advisory calls to select media representatives. We will need a
full slate of volunteers to staff the event, with three shifts of three
hours each. Volunteers will have an excellent opportunity to talk to
the media. A full court press towards media outreach will commence on
Wednesday, April 17, with a draft of an advisory and follow up calls to
media the Friday
before.
