Does Fences have the ability to arrange and save the desktop icons positions that are outside of fences? I've read some posts that say there may be an issue with this functionality on multiple monitor setups. Fences 3.09 and now beta 3.10 for me disables the ability of 3rd party desktop utilities that save and arrange desktop icons.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. From what I understand Fences V3.09 does have issues on Multi-Monitor Icons positioning outside Fences. And I don't think Fences is compatible with other 3rd party Desktop utilities that save and arrange desktop icons.

Before installing Fences I had my multimonitor (3) desktop icons arranged the way I wanted. I used a utility, Desktop OK, to save the icon positions in the default arrangement. After installing Fences, all the icons were sent to the 1st monitor in a random arrangement in the lower left corner. If the icon arrangement was fouled up without Fences, I can use Desktop OK to restore the icon placements to the last saved arrangement. With Fences installed, Desktop OK no longer functions.

Sean, when Fences starts initially after installing, all the desktop icons from my 3 monitors are sent to the lower left corner of the primary monitor in a random order. I chose the create fences manually option when the program initially started. This is a bug in my mind. Fences should start and not rearrange the current icon positions at all, and then you go about creating fences.

I understand that you can't support 3rd party apps. Does Fences have an option to save desktop icon positions (icons NOT in a fence) and restore those positions if necessary? If so, that eliminates the need for a 3rd party app. I find that would be a valuable option as not all my icons will be put in a fence and the ability to restore positions if necessary is important.

Here's my primary desktop after Fences starts for the first time. The first 2 columns of icons are OK and haven't been moved. The rest are all randomly placed. The second are from a secondary monitor. Those icons are totally random.

I've been having Explorer crashes for close to a year related to Fences. Two different corporate lap tops. Both have had the purge performed. One was a brand new PC with a fresh install of Windows and Fences. I'm running Fences 3.09 but I tried rolling back to 2.0 and this was an issue with both. Our company does not use Websense or ForcePoint. Explorer would crash when I used Win+D, when dragging something to the lower right corner to the "show desktop button" (same functionality as Win+D), when snapping windows or documents to the side of the screen to go split screen with two items, and when I used remote access services I could not drag/drop from the remote PC to my desktop. Removing Fences fixed all these issues.

I've changed my background to a solid color and the snapping, and remote desktop issues are fixed. The show desktop functionality still crashes explorer using Win+D or the show desktop button in the lower right hand corner.

So is there a path forward to fix Explorer crashes for Forcepoint/Websence users?

I remember that a year or so ago sdRohan was implying that the fix is just a matter of time, but time passes and not much is happening.

So what to expect?

I'm running Windows 10.0.18362 Build 18362 but this issue has been happening over several iterations of Windows.

From what I understand, Fences never work properly on System with Forcepoint installed. Somehow, Forcepoint is blocking Fences. As Forcepoint is a security type software it is best to set Forcepoint so it will allow Fences to work. I don't think there is anything Fences can do to go around this issue. It best for user or their company IT guy to configure the Forcepoint.

I am having the same problem with Fences 3 "Explorer was not closed properly" . I am not in a corporate environment and am not running any of the software that you've been saying causes the problem (Forcepoint, etc). I have a simple laptop with Windows 10 and Fences 3. It worked for several weeks since I installed it and just today starts getting the error. I tried the restart, reinstall, etc forum suggestions and nothing works. My antivirus is simply the one Windows 10 came with. I have (and I am the admin of my simple PC) not changed my antivirus or any programs in the 3 weeks that Fences worked for me. The problem started when I clicked on (tried to open) a file in one of my fences. The program did not start and the screen went black and started looping me thru the error message, re-enable fences sequence.

I'm facing the exact same situation as greenmd13 in reply #77
For ease I'm using his words:

I'm running Windows 10 Version 1709 Build 16299.1217 but this issue has been happening over several iterations of Windows.

When getting the new notebook and having the same problem again, I was at the point of dropping Fences for this issue, but since I found this thread, I regained hope that someone will finally fix this.

Did this ever get fixed? I'm having the same issue. Still in 2021 on 3 different PCs all windows 10. I did open a ticket and they told me that support for bugs is only delivered via forums... odd. this is clearly a bug that needs development attention. Is there a jiras tracking number for this yet?
