Anderson offers unique size and physicality, while Johnson is smaller at 6-0, 195, but is one of the fastest players on the team. Over the last two seasons, he has shown improved hands and route-running, culminating with his 124-yard, two-TD performance in the Texas Bowl last December.
Rodarius Williams has one cornerback spot locked down for the fourth straight year, but the other side is vacant after A.J. Green graduated. A two-year starter at safety, Jarrick Bernard-Converse finds himself in a new position and a battle for the job.
He transitioned to cornerback in spring but only got three practices there before the coronavirus pandemic shut it down. Now, Christian Holmes, a graduate transfer from Missouri has arrived to push Bernard-Converse for the job.
Four-star recruit Shane Illingworth got a head start on the battle when he arrived in January. Junior-college transfer Ethan Bullock joined the mix in the summer. And walk-ons Shaun Taylor and Peyton Thompson got important backup reps last season, though the opportunities to make headway will thin out quickly in preseason camp.
Illingworth has the tools to be an eventual star. But Bullock was brought in for a reason, particularly after what the Cowboys saw happen a year ago when Sanders went down and Dru Brown became the starter.
Los Angeles batted around twice in the first four innings, with much of that initial damage coming against starter Adrian Houser. All told, the Dodgers outscored the Brewers, 22-7, in the final two games of the three-game series.
More important, it cost them a prime opportunity to gain ground in their hunt for a postseason spot as both the San Diego Padres (1-game lead for the third wild-card spot) and St. Louis Cardinals (up 5 games in the Central Division) were losers on Wednesday as well.
Los Angeles drew three walks and got RBI singles from Freddie Freeman and Justin Turner with Cody Bellinger then capping the damage done against Houser with a two-out, two-RBI double to right that made it 4-1.
After allowing a Chris Taylor double and Bellinger single with one out in the third, Houser was removed in favor of Peter Strzelecki. Then two batters later, a botched toss by Adames on what should have been a double-play grounder by Austin Barnes allowed Taylor to score.
Jason Alexander pitched 3 1/3 innings out of the bullpen to eat up some important innings and help save the bullpen from being further taxed heading into a six-game homestand against the Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates.
Adames doubled off Joey Gallo's glove in the seventh to reach base for the fourth time in as many plate appearances. He had a chance at the cycle but flew out in the ninth against position player Hanser Alberto.
Meja, who pitched twice for the Brewers earlier this season before being banned for 80 games after a positive PED test, is 0-1 with a 2.45 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 14 2/3 innings over 13 appearances for Nashville.
Before looking backing at how the top 10 during the 247Sports Composite era have fared there are a couple of outliers that have gone on to have standout careers in Aggieland including Ryan Tannehil and Johnny Manziel while others like Nick Starkel also saw time as a starter.
While Johnny Manziel was entrenched as the starter, Texas A&M continued to add depth at the quarterback landing a top-10 dual threat prospect in Hill. After helping Southlake Carroll to a state title as a junior, Hill followed that up passing for more than 3,300 yards passing as a senior, including 27 touchdowns and only three interceptions. He added another 1,400 yards on the ground and scored 33 rushing touchdowns.
After appearing in three games during the 2013 season, Hill threw 23 for 2,649 yards and 23 touchdowns in his first season as a starter in 2014 while leading A&M to a 5-0 start and No. 6 ranking in the country. A 48-31 loss to Mississippi State however, kicked off a three-game losing streak while Hill was suspended for two games after that for a violation of team rules. After freshman Kyle Allen took over as the starter, Hill transferred following the season to TCU where he threw 32 touchdowns in 21 games for the Horned Frogs.
He was also a standout on the baseball diamond though and never ended up making it to campus in Aggieland after he was selected fourth overall in the 2013 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft by the Minnesota Twins. After several years in the minor leagues, Stewart briefly explored giving up baseball to return to football, however, he stuck with it and it paid off when he was called by the Twins in August of 2018. In a cool moment last April, Stewart made his return to Houston for a spot start, where he pitched six innings facing off against Justin Verlander but did take the loss as the Astros won 7-1.
Stowers suffered a knee injury in the state championship game but hopes to be back by the time district play rolls around this fall. He will finish out his final season at Denton Guyer playing under the guidance of Rodney Webb, who will bring over his high-powered offense from Rockwall to lead the Wildcats.
Texas A&M will have senior quarterback Kellen Mond back under center for the 2020 season but a quarterback battle is expected heading into the 2021 season that will likely include former Longview standout Haynes King as well as Zach Calzada, James Foster and A&M commit Eli Stowers, who is expected to enroll early as well.
With Kenny Hill grabbing hold of the quarterback job, Davis, a former four-star recruit out of Klein Forest opted to transfer to Tyler J.C. After one season in the junior college ranks, Davis transferred to SMU where he started the final five games in his first season as a sophomore in 2014 and was the full-time starter in 2015 as well.
A highly regarded prospect coming out of IMG Academy, Mond set single season records for both touchdown passes and rushing touchdowns in helping IMG Academy to a No. 2 national ranking before being named as a 2017 Under Armour All-American Game selection.
Mond supplanted Nick Starkel heading into the 2018 season after starting eight games as a freshman. Mond has started every game the past two seasons and took steps forward as a passer completing a career-high 62 percent of his passes this past season while throwing for 2,897 yards and 20 touchdowns. Turnovers were still a problem at times for Mond with nine interceptions, albeit the Aggies played one of the most difficult schedules in the country facing off against three top-ranked teams in Clemson, LSU and Alabama.
Stephen McGee was one of the top quarterback prospects in the country when he signed with Texas A&M out of Burnet High School in 2004. It worked out well for A&M as McGee went on to become a multi-year starter at A&M before becoming a fourth-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys. He was the first quarterback drafted by the Cowboys since Quincy Carter in 2001 and only the second since 1991.
The class of 2015 five-star prospect, according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite, could not translate that success to A&M where he completed just over 59 percent of his passes while throwing just five touchdowns to seven interceptions before transferring to Oklahoma.
After initially sitting behind Kenny Hill to open the 2014 season, Allen was named the starter against Louisiana-Monroe after Hill was suspended for a violation of team rules. Down the stretch of that season, Allen threw for 16 touchdowns and seven interceptions that year before splitting time with Kyler Murray as a sophomore and finishing the year with 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Allen transferred after the year to Houston but could not hold onto the starting job there either before leaving early for the NFL. After going undrafted, Allen caught on with the Carolina Panthers and saw action in each of the past two seasons. After resigning with the Panthers on a one-year deal, Allen was traded to the Washington Redskins after the Panthers signed former XFL standout P.J Walker.
Ranked as the No. 8 player in the 2002 class, according to the 247Sports Composite, McNeal off the bench as a true freshman against Oklahoma throwing four touchdown passes to help the Aggies topple the top-ranked Sooners.
