For the first blog in this series, we invited Maite Gomez-Rejn, founder of ArtBites: Cooking Art History, to share a recipe responding to the works of Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo. Learn about Gomez-Rejn's interests and inspirations, then try her recipe for a Mango-Pineapple Mezcal Margarita!
I'm Maite Gomez-Rejn, an art and culinary historian, writer, educator, and cook. In 2007, I founded ArtBites: Cooking Art History and have been exploring the nexus of art and culinary history ever since. I do this through lectures, cooking classes, dinners, and tastings at museums across the country (including the Cur-ATE dinner series at LACMA which began in 2012). Most recently I've shifted gears and have been "cooking art history" through online cooking classes and videos.
I was particularly drawn to Woman with Fruit Basket (Mujer con canasta de frutas) and Man with Tall Hat (Hombre con sombrero alto) because both paintings reminded me of the colors and textures seen all over Oaxaca. Man with Tall Hat (featured in the exhibition Rufino Tamayo: Innovation and Experimentation) even depicts a typical hat from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region of Oaxaca, while the stacked homes in the background allude to Cubist landscapes. These two works made me think about the region and the trajectory of the fruits depicted in the painting, including the history of mezcal. When I then learned that Rufino Tamayo worked at his family's fruit stand in his youth, a mezcal margarita made with seasonal fruit was a no-brainer.
We associate tropical fruits like mangoes and pineapples with Mexico although the only native fruit in Woman with Fruit Basket is the mamey, the fruit seen with its flesh peeking out. Mangoes are native to India and made their way to Mexico via the Philippines on the Manila Galleons in the 18th century and quickly became a part of the viceroyalty's culinary repertoire. The fruit is often referred to as mango de Manila (mango from Manila).
The pineapple, on the other hand, is native to the lowlands of Brazil but its cultivation had spread to Mexico well before the conquest. The Aztecs referred to the fruit as matzatli. Tepache, a fermented beverage made from maize in pre-colonial times is now commonly made with fermented pineapple rind and piloncillo or brown sugar. Oaxaca is one of the main producers of pineapple in the country.
By the late 1800s, "mezcal brandy" was exported into the United States and Europe. When "vino de mezcal de Tequila" won an award at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, tequila makers and the Mexican government dropped the word "mezcal" from the name and the two most beloved Mexican spirits became known as simply mezcal (from Oaxaca) or tequila (from Tequila, Jalisco).
It's the perfect dessert to transport me back to the lush rainforests and vibrant streets of Costa Rica. Keep up the great work, and please continue to share more Costa Rican recipes. Pura Vida!

You won't believe how utterly simple and easy this is, and yet it tastes exotic and wonderful and, what's more, it can all be prepared well in advance and the fish added about 10 minutes before you want to eat it.
This will take 20 minutes or so, and you will have about 1 pint (570 ml) left. Now make the curry paste, and all you do is put everything in a food processor or blender and whiz until you have a rather coarse, rough-looking paste and everything is perfectly blended.
Now, over a medium heat, add the curry paste and fish to the pan and, once it has reached simmering point, give it 4 minutes. Finally, add the mango and cook for a further 2 minutes. Serve the curry with the coriander sprinkled over and Thai fragrant rice as an accompaniment. To prepare the curry in advance, make everything up, keeping the paste covered in the fridge, then, 10 minutes before you want to serve, bring the coconut milk back up to the boil, then add the paste, fish and mango as above.

Mango TV was established on May 26, 2006, in Changsha, Hunan by Ruobo Zhang, the former Mango TV chairman and CEO.[7][8] On April 20, 2014, the original Mango TV and Golden Eagle website were integrated into a single online video platform which exclusively holds all of Hunan Broadcasting System and Hunan Satellite TV's content and enjoys their copyright works, also known as "Mango Exclusive Broadcast".[9] In October 2014, Mango TV created the first self-produced web series 'Huayang Jianghu'.[10] On 2014 New Year Countdown Night, held by Hunan Satellite TV, Mango TV launched five-screen live broadcast mode, allowing audience to select different camera positions and angles to watch the celebration show.[11]
In 2015, Mango TV shifted its aims from 'Exclusive Broadcast' to 'Unique Content',[further explanation needed] during which period the number of users has increased to 60 million on the platform.[12] In October 2015, Mango TV signed a memorandum with BBC Worldwide for more opportunities on co-production in the global market.[13]
On June 23, 2016, Mango TV completed series B funding with nearly 1.5 billion.[14] Mango TV planned to go public in 2016.[15] But the plan failed and Mango TV ended up being included into Happigo Home Shopping Co. Ltd, going public with other six companies.[16] Critics stated that it would be better for Mango TV to obtain fully controlled operating authority. With Hunan Broadcasting System owning more than 50% shares, it is hard for Mango TV to make decisions all by itself.[17]
In May 2018, during Ireland's performance in the first semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2018, Mango TV blurred and censored gay love symbols such as a kiss and LGBT flags, and the Albanian performance in the same show was cut out entirely due to a ban on television performers displaying tattoos that took effect in January 2018. In response, the European Broadcasting Union, which organises the event, terminated its partnership with Mango TV, which led to a ban on televising the remaining shows or any future editions of the event.[18]
In October 2014, Mango TV's first self-produced network drama 'Huayang Jianghu' debuted, which featured ancient Chinese world as well as costumes and starred young idols.[19] In late 2014, Mango TV produced the second drama 'Jinpai Hongniang'. The drama featured fixed cast compared to previous network dramas which preferred to take each episode with different actors.[20]
In 2015, Mango TV produced the first interactive network live show 'Perfect Holiday', featuring normal young participants living in the same house.[21] The production used multi-positioned cameras which enabled audience to watch the show with different angles of rooms. Later in July 2016, 'Perfect Holiday 2' debuted with more rooms in different themes. It added new IP cameras that would follow the participants all the time, which increased the sense of entertainment.[22]
