Hello, everyone

The parish records for Ribeirinha (Ribeira Grande - São Miguel) are now online.

A big applause to the CCA archivists and the LDS volunteers for the work they did in scanning and making available all the parish records for the Azores. It's a project that when I started paying attention was already halfway done, but that was a monumental task by everyone involved.

You referenced the LDS Volunteers and the work they did in getting these records on-line.  Do you know what part they played and where was it performed.  Just curious – I know they do filming and scanning of records and even indexing those records but just was interested in their role in this project.  Thanks for all you do in helping us and keeping us informed and updated.

They do filming, scanning and provide the CDs to the Azores Archives. I'm not LDS, so I have no idea what other part they played, but they do play an essential part in this project.

Thank you and I agree whole heartedly.   I did not know that they had provided the CDs to the Archives but it does make sense.  I know they have an indexing project where the scanned records are reviewed and the information on them is put in a database so that it can be searched to help in furthering our genealogy research.  Anyone can join in the indexing project through familysearch.org.  Since I read some Portuguese (poorly of course) I have signed up to help and to date have done some passport records and baptismal records of some of the mainland.  I do it in my spare time and there is no commitment regarding time you spend (although once you start a small batch[as they are called], they would like you to finish that batch in about a week – I believe).  It is very satisfying and rewarding to help others in this work.

Yes I have.  I know if you go into FamilySearch.org and go to My Info, Help, My History – it shows 0 names arbitrated (this is a glitch and wrong).  If you click on the desktop shortcut icon and go to Arbitration Results, it shows your recently completed batches with the arbitration results.  I always do this a few days after completing a batch and there are always arbitration results indicated with the arbitrators differences so that you can see where you differ.  You notice that I said where you differ, rather than saying you see where you were wrong.  I say this because sometimes the arbitrator has made a mistake and you were right.  When the new version comes out later this year or early next year, you will be able to comment on the arbitrators comment and have it reviewed to see who is correct.  Many improvements in the new version to come.

So does this mean that every baptismo, obitos and casamento that currently exists has been microfilmed/digitized and posted, and there are no further records available even in hard book form?

It's complicated to answer that question.. You can look at the catalog of all the books that the CCA has here: http://www.arquivos.azores.gov.pt/

That site had been 'under the radar' for some time, but now they're promoting it officially.

The problem is that acording to the current site, they've published 5527 books, but the catalog lists 11778 books. The missing 6251 books are probably explained by the fact that they've aggregated a lot of the later books into a single one.

Could you give us an example of how the search information should be filled out.  I keep trying different things and keep coming up with 0 items found.  For instance, if I wanted to find the baptism records for Praia, Graciosa, for the years 1800-1950.  How would I enter this information.  Thanks for your help.

You can't search on CCA. You have to know the island and freguisia the person comes from. They are laid out just like the books they are photographed from, in volumes by years.

Each book is in chronological order. They would write each days record on the pages, and keep going until the book was filled

Since you know where you want to look , you go to

 Registos Paroquisais" Then choose the  ILHA-  " Graciosa"

                                               

                                         CONCELHO- Santa Cruz

                        

                      FREGUISIA- San Mateus da Praia

     Then choose what you want to look at Baptismo, Casamentos, Obitos

Example- Baptismo,   you get them from 1591-1911

Pick your year, then click the page numbers at the left, and start reading... it's a steep learning curve, but eventually it gets easy.

Thank you for your reply.  I am very familiar with reading the books from both the LDS microfilm and the LDS Portuguese collections.  What I am trying to find out is what the books held by the CCA look like since sometimes I find that the copy that the LDS church has is the other copy of the books that the Portuguese archives has (One has the original and one has the copy that was made and submitted to the archives).

 

So, as you referenced, I should go to “Registos Paroquisais” then to ILHA, etc., etc.,.  What is the link for “Registos Paroquisais” – how do I get there?

A few things were mentioned since I last visited the group.

1. Searching on the 'newer/different' CCA. Note that this one is only the catalog - there are NO images. On the other hand, it's the complete catalog, and not just the parish records.

a) You have to go into advanced search (top right), or use this URL: http://www.arquivos.azores.gov.pt/asearch

b) enter one of the following on the reference code field:

          PT/BPARAH/PRQ (for the Angra do Heroismo archive)

          PT/BPARPD/PRQ (for the Ponta Delgada archive)

          PT/BPARJJG/PRQ (for the Horta archive)

c) then, on the 'description levels' tick the Fonds checkbox.

d) press the search button

2) The instructions provided by Eric are for the original/older site that DOES contain the images, but the books follow some arbitrary aggregation are not necessarily 1:1 with the catalog.

Did you use the advanced search? The URL I gave goes straight there. Make sure the query starts with "PT" without any leading spaces. Also no trailing spaces.

Subject?      Title?    Physical Location ? 

I've tried every field combination with common surnames and get no returns

Even using the simple search with a common name gives no returns

Wondering a couple of things... First, does anyone know about the Faial the Flemish wore? http://sangbleu.com/2013/09/03/the-faial-capote/

Also, I have been stuck on Serifino Mendonca. I have been pouring through the records, but they are hard for me to read. Is the column on the left in the old books, where a single first name appears to be written, the child's first name??.

From family legend, my information is Serifino was Flemish, green eyes and red hair. Is there a way to narrow down the 1877 birth record search based on where the Flemish were. I was told he came to the U.S. as a bond servant to a Basque man. He maried a Dalmaso, who was of a prominent family, and she was disowned. They appear to have been both in Mass. And Santa Barbara, CA.

Any direction would be helpful...thank you all for doing such great work on this page.

You need to start a new posting for  the Santa Barbara Mendonca questions. It will get lost in this thread about the CCA records.

I have researched many Central Coast Portuguese families  and a handful of Mendonca in California. 

Since the Flemish that colonized Faial and the other western islands started arriving in the 1500s , the distribution is uniform. I have ancestors from Pico and Flores with distinctlly

Flemish features.

The "Reference code" goes in the "reference code" field. This is to search the catalog.. As in the parish books that each archive has. The individual records in each book are not part of the catalog.

This is the same information that the CCA provides, except it's a lot more detailed on the data regarding the book's archival status.
