Hello everyone
I would like to try something to help everyone. This is not a "roll call". What  I would like to see is everyone who is actively researching their family history posting a short history of their family. This is meant to help you, not cause you problems. We tend to forget the families associated with this list and thus we are unable to keep track of each others histories. I'll start by listing my own family history briefly:

My Maternal GGrandmother was Leopoldina Jacintha Canhoto daughter of:
Manuel Jacintho Pimentel Canhoto Jr. and
Isabel de Jesus Encarnação

She and her family are from Santa Cruz das Flores. I've determined that the name "Canhoto" is an "alcunha" or nickname. I believe that the true surname of the family is "Pimentel" which is used by all of my GGrandfathers as a middle name. It stops in 1791-2 when Manuel Canhoto and Inacia Rosa had two children baptized. Then, in 1789, a Manuel Pimentel and Inacia Rosa have a child baptized. Unfortunately, the Grandparents and Godparents are not mentioned in the three different baptismos, so I am unable to establish a definite link between these families. I'm still working on this.
My GGrandmother married three times. The first marriage was to Diogo Antonio Syrineu, who died at sea in 1884 in  Fajazinha, Flores, along with two shipmates when their  boat overturned.
My GGrandmother was pregnant a the time with my Uncle, Diogo.

She came to the U.S. and later married Manuel Francisco Mathias, who changed his name to Matthews. They had four children.
I have no link as to when he  died or was out of the picture.

However, sometime in early 1890's, my GGrandfather Jose Simão and she four additional children. He changed his name to Simmons. He passed away in 1917. He is suppose to be from Calheta, São Miguel. I have never been able to find anything to establish anything about him. The records for São Miguel show nothing. His parents were listed as José Simão and Carlotta Medeiros. Again, nothing more has been found.

My Paternal Grandfather was David Nunes Rocha,  born 1895 in Aradas, Aveiro, Portugal (on the continent). I have located my family and received a phone call one day, after having sent a letter to my cousin, from his daughter, Odette, also my cousin. I'm still pursuing this family.

Those are the basics of my family as I know them now. Considering I had nothing on anyone when I started, I have gone pretty far in my research as I see it .

I still am looking daily for information. I hope this gives all of you a little idea as  to what I am getting at. Again, this is not a "roll call". Let's all participate and see what we find. We tend to forget who is involved in what family and as a result forget possible connections with other members. Let's see what happens
regards to all

Cliff,

What a great idea!

My paternal great-grandparents were Jose Pereira Pires and Joana de Sao Jose de Bettencourt, both from old families in Beira/Velas on Sao Jorge Island. My grandfather was Joao (Joam) Pereira Pires, who came to California in 1860s. (Yes, grandfather. He was 63 when my father was born, and in turn my father was 41 when I was born). Grandfather worked the mines near Nevada City, and eventually became a cement contractor in Los Angeles. He took the name Geniella, a variation of the Portuguese word Janela. The Pires family's "alcunha" had been Janela in Beira during his time. Grandfather came with a brother Antone, who took the name of Peters. Antone Peters of Ventura, who married Sarah Olivas. A Pires sister also came, Ana, who married Joseph Rosa Silva in Ventura.

Have detailed genealogy going back from Jose Pereira Pires and Joana de Sao Jose de Bettencourt, but any links of great interest. Obrigado!

Hi, this is Nancy Faria

My paternal grandparents are Isabel Borba and Joe T. Faria. Joe came to California from Pico sometime (I believe) in the 1930's. Isabel was born in Hawaii in 1906, grew up in Oakland and eventually came to the San Joaquin Valley, where she and my grandfather were married and had 6 children.

I know very little of their families' histories, and welcome any oral histories as well as facts about their backgrounds.

Happy New Year!
Nancy

My maternal grandmother's father was Manuel Fernandes 1878-1909 son of:
Luiz Fernandes (son of Jose Mattos and Jacinta Fernandes) and
Roza de Jesus Pacheco (daughter of Jacinto Pacheco and Maria Machado)

Luiz and Roza came to Hawaii with Manuel (4) and Jose (6mo) in Sept 1882. They were from Faja de Cima, Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel. I haven't been able to find out what happened to Luiz or Jose other than they died sometime before 1910. Roza and Manuel at some point came to Oakland, Ca from Hawaii. Manuel married Maria Augusta Pereira sometime around 1903. He was a dynamite technician at the Diamond Canyon Quarry in Oakland. He was killed there in a premature blast on Aug 16, 1909. He had 2 daughters at the time and one on the way that he didn't know about yet. Rose, Mary and Delphina Fernandes. Mary being my grandmother, married Jose Medeiros in Oct 1925.

My maternal grandmother's mother was Maria Augusta Pereira 1886-1959 born in Oakland, CA daughter of:
Manuel Periera 1850-1933 born Sao Miguel (son of Antonio and Theresa Pereira) and
Joaquina Morgado 1854-1933 born in Hawaii, (daughter of Manuel Raposa Morgado and Theresa de Jesus both born in Sao Miguel)

My maternal grandfather was Jose Medeiros 1898-1979 born Cedros, Faial son of:
Manuel Medeiros 1875-1959 born in Cedros, Faial (son of Antonio and Maria Clara Medeiros) and
Mary Machado 1875-1942

My grandfather (Jose) came to the US in 1906 from Faial to Boston with his mother brother and sister. He was 7 at the time. They traveled from Boston to Martinez, CA by train to meet his father who had come here sometime before and established a ranch in the Briones Valley before sending for them. I have not been able to determine when Manuel arrived.

I still have a lot of gaps and history to fill in but I feel pretty good about what I have so far. Three years ago, the only info I had was my grandparent's names and birth dates and places and my great grandparent's names. I will continue to search for as much infomation and documentation that I can find.

Cliff,
You have a great idea. Unfortunately I am unable to give much
information on my family.
Only that my mother, Velma Cotta was born in 1910 in California. I
assume her maiden name was Cotta.
Have not been able to get any further than that.

Dave
That's a start. When I started, I had very little information. I knew my GGreatmothers place of birth and name. That was it. A friend from another site found my family in a personal index of the microfilm for Nossa Senhora da Conceição. That was a big start for me. As for my Grandfathers family, a friend in LIsboa helped me on that. I had certain information which helped him in making some phone calls to Aveiro to an Attorney friend. When Luis said the name of Joaõ Rocha AKA Johnny da Rocha, he immediately recognized the name. He told my friend that Johnny was dead and his nephew, same generation as my mother, had taken over the family business, a furniture manufacturing business. I found out the siblings of my Grandather, eight of them, and was told that she would send me photos of him as a child and of the family.

Anyway, that's the way things are in Genealogy. ONe day you have nothing, the next day you have too much data to comprehend. Make sure you have your information in a  genealogy program it is safe. If you need help, that's why we're here. Let us know what you need. I want to wish you the very best of a new year and success in your search.
god bless

Being an IT person, I find it easier to work from lists than narratives.  So, I have taken one of the RM reports and broken it out.  First, there’s a list of just names.  Then, how they break down in my family.  Ethelwyn (the first person) is my paternal grandmother.  I have had several iterations of this data over the years, so if you find the same names but slightly different configuration, let’s talk!

Here’s the list of names I am searching:  (I sure hope someone has some connections as I am stumped!).

this is an excellent way of doing this. I myself have done the same thing on occasion. Only problem is that it tends to give a little to much information depending on the person reading. But, i'm not criticizing you. Again, it's excellent.
Thanks for participating(as usual)

Hi cliff,

I went back and forth and figured too much info is OK if it is organized well.  I was hoping it would not cause anyone issues..figured with a list up front, it probably wont.

Cliff this is a great idea and it may help a lot of people in this group get to know each other and to help them out.  So here I go

My Paternal Grandfather was Jose Pereira Camacho born 09/12/1898 in Santo Atonio Maderia, to Joao Pereira Camacho and Antonia de Freitas Basenga.  I do not know much about my Great-Grandparents except for the year of the birth and Parents. My Paternal grandfather came to USA and landed in Boston on March 1920 where he meet up from what we where told as kids to be his only other sibling, which he later disown, because of money. During my research I did find out that my Grandfather did have 2 other brothers and a sister which all passed away at a young age.  He also changed his name later, which I do not know when to Joseph Perry Camacho, which is the correct way of spelling and saying his name in English, I was told.

In 1921 my Grandfather married my Paternal Grandmother Rosa Correa Reis in Lowell Mass., she was born 07/05/1899 in Santa Cruz, Fontas, Graciousa to Jose Correa dos Reis and Maria Candida Margarida da Veiga. I do not know much about either side of my Great-grandparents, I know that my grandmother came to the USA in November 1915 and landed in Boston, I know that several of her sisters and brothers immigrated to the USA along with uncle and aunt, but I have not been able to find anything on them.  When my grandfather was around my grandmother never talked much about his side of the family but always talked about her sisters and brother.  My Grandparents has 6 children, Mary, Margaret, Joseph, Elsie, Philip, (my Dad) and Grace.  My paternal grandfather died 03/25/1968 and my grandmother on 09/22/1981 in Santa Cruz, CA. USA

I was lucky to know my Maternal Great-grandparents, which was my mother’s mother’s parents, which is where I have most of the success of my research.  My maternal great-grandfather was Antonio Machado Evangelho born 09/05/1888 in Rio de Janeiro Brazil to Antonio Machado Evangelho and Maria do Carmo Evangelho, yes they where third Cousins, doing my research I found that most of the family was born in Ribeirinha,Terceira, Azores, but they moved several times to and from Brazil, to work and to try and get married, and end up getting married after my great-grandfather was born, which was the 5th child born, there was a total of 11 children in this family.  I also found out that there were a few other marriages between blood relations with the same last name of Evangelho.  My Great-grandfather came to the USA on May 16, 1909 though Elis Island and then came to CA. to meet up with other friends and family.  I found his documents by mistake as they misspelled his first and last name and he end up leaving his new last name as Evangelo.

My maternal Great-grandmother was Maria Candida Pacheco Ferreira she was born 11/01/1896 in Ribeirinha,Terceira, Azores to Francisco Pacheco Ferreira and Francisca Candida de Jesus da Silveira, like my Great-grandfather all of her family came from Ribeirinha,Terceira, Azores, I do not know if they knew each other or what, but I feel there families had too, if they came from the same village.  My Great-grandmother last names were added and drop several times in my research, they would either leave the Ferreira off and it would be Pacheco only or both.  By looking at it I feel depending on the priest, for explain on one set of births records the father to my GG-grandfather was Benito Jose Pacheco and on another one it was Benito Pacheco Ferreira. She came to the USA via Boston MA on 03/09/1914 and came to CA to meet up with family and friends

My maternal great-grandparents Antonio Machado Evangelho and Maria Candida Pacheco Ferreira where married 06/24/1914, I was told in Merced CA but I have not found any records in the State of CA prove that.  My last great aunt that passed away in 2000 told me that she knew that there was a lot of children her parents had but I know of the following Unk Baby in 1915, set of twins 1916, my grandmother Virginia, Maria, Antonio, Lena, Evelyn, Carmina, Alice Louise and Alice.  Both of my great-grandparents passed away in Santa Cruz CA, my ggrandfather in 1961 and my great-grandmother in 1971.

My maternal grandmother was Virginia Alice Evangelho born 08/06/1917 in either Los Banos or Das Places CA; both are in Merced County, CA.  I was told by family members that there was fire in the home, when and where is unknown and it destroy a lot of documents and information on the family, no one can tell me if anyone was lost in the fire either.

My maternal grandfather was Jose Correia da Costa born 11-14-1904 in Santa Barbara Terceira to Manuel Machado da Costa and Anna da Jesus d' Azevedo I do not have much on this side of the family but my grandfather immigrated to USA in 09/28/1920 and landed in Providence RI and then travel to CA by himself to meet up with family in Castro Valley area.  He meet and married my grand mother June 29 1933 in Santa Cruz, CA. where they had 4 children Josephine, Anne Mae, my mother, Anthony and Alice.  My grandfather died 09/14/1959 and my grand mother 03/13/1973 both in Santa Cruz

I know this is long but I got tried up of telling a story that is so dear to my heart

Hi Everyone,

I myself am 100% German and have been doing my genealogy for a little over 20 years now.  I thought I would take a break and work on my husband's family for my grandchildren.  I started gathering some documents on them and them and then got caught up with my own family again.

My husband was born in Celorico da Beira, as was his mother (and father I think, I don't have the information in front of me. His father was Antonio de Oliveira b. 1890 and his mother Maria Queiroz b.1907.  Her father's name was Cesar.

I know that the name Conceição is in there too somewhere.  I will have to pull everything out and get back to you with the details.

Thanks for the opportunity.

Sorry about the delay.  I had this all typed up and ready to send when I lost power and lost all that I had written.  We are curently traveling in the RV and I am not always on line.  Curently enjoying Cajun Country LA.

My father’s maternal ggrandfather was Lucio Jose (Louis Joseph) born in 1841 Lomba, Flores Island and died April 1902, he is buried in Napa, CA.  He was fishing and whaling and went around the world on two expeditions.  On the last voyage they were shipwreaked and all of the crew was rescued and taken to the harbor in Boston, MA.  While in Boston he married Maria Lucia Dagloria Avelar in 1862 (taken from Histories of Napa and Solano Counties).  I have not found the marriage record in the state archives and the church records were recently moved and I do not know which parish to look into. Hope to get to the Boston area one of these days.  Maria was born in 1846 Flores Island and died April 1892 in Napa 1892.  Louis purchased land in Wild Horse Valley, Napa, CA where he lived for the rest of his life.

Their daughter Maria Siqueira born June 1869, Napa, CA, married Manuel Antonio Dos Reis born April 1864 North Grande, Sao Jorge, Oct 1890 in Napa , CA.  Maria died Oct 1899 in Napa, CA, Manuel died March 1943, Lathrop, CA.  Their daughter Anna Dos Reis is my grandmother born Nov 1894 Vallejo, CA, died Nov 1985, Manteca, CA

Manuel Dos Reis’s parents were Manuel Antonio Dos Reis born 1800’s North Grande, Sao Jorge, died in North Grande, Sao Jorge, married Anna Luiza de Bettencourt born 1800’s North Grande, Sao Jorge, died 1927 Vallejo, CA.

My paternal ggrandfather was Joao Jose Alvernas Silveira born Sep 1847 Prainha/Sao Roque, Pico, he married Maria  Emilia Oliver born 1851, Prainha/Sao Roque, Pico, Feb 1870.  My grandfather Henrique (Harry) Silveira born Aug 1889, Prainha/Sao Roque, Pico came to the USA in 1903 and worked milking cows in Sausalito, CA and used to tell us about watching San Francisco burn after the great earthquake.  After milking cows in the evening they would sit on the hillside and watch the fires.  My great grandparents were visiting a son in Newman area and my ggrandfather is buried in Newman, he died in May 1926.  My ggrandmother went to Brazil as she did not like it here and had two daughters in Brazil.  My grandfather lost contact with her and I no nothing about her or her daughters.

My maternal grandmother Josephine Grace Cabral born May 1903 Watsonville, CA died Salida, CA June 2003 (100 years old).  Her parents were John Cabral born 1861 Ponta Delgada, San Miguel died 1930 San Jose, CA married Marianna Neves Morris born Feb 1869 North Grande, Sao Jorge, died Jan 1952, San Jose, CA.  I remember as a young girl sitting on her bed as she was bedridden.  She spoke no English.  I was lucky for have all 4 of my grandparents until I was 18.  Unfortunately I did not  ask enough questions.

Hi Kim
We have been in Abbeville for the last 3 weeks, leaving Monday for Natchitoches and then into Texas to do some genealogy on my husband's family.  We had planned to stay in Slidell and drive into New Orleans, but once we got here my husband decided he did not want to chance getting into the wrong areas of New Orleans.  We have been having a blast here in the area.  Learned to eat crawfish and lots of other things.  The people in Louisiana are the friendliest and nicest.  Today we went to a kraklin festival in Maurice.  We will be back.

Hi Shirley,

Natchitoches is beautiful.  That is were they filmed the movie Steel Magnolias from 1989 with Julia Roberts, Sally Fields, Olympia Dukakis, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacClaine and Daryl Hannah.

That was a smart move by your husband not to go to New Orleans for chance of getting into the wrong areas.  I live across Lake Pontchartrain on the North Shore about 50 miles away from New Orleans.

Oh I love crawfish.  A good dip for the crawfish is make a thousand island dressing with ketchup and mayonaise and add tabasco sauce to dip the crawfish in.  They are great that way.
Yes the people in Louisiana are very nice as in the other southern states.

Have a good and safe trip.

We did do a day trip to Layfette and will be going through Opoulasas.

We are doing genealogy in Camron and Taylor Texas and will probably be going to Austin for the archives and Hills Collage in Hillsboro for Civil War records.  We will also be in Livingston and Fredericksburg.  My husband is a history buff so will be visiting other places as well.  Will probably be in Texas for at least a month.

HI Shirley
I'm so jealous when I hear of trips like your. I always had a dream
that we would retire, get a motor home, and take off like you two are
doing. Now, I don't think that will happen. Too many health issues.
However, I wish you the very best in your travels. Please keep us
updated. My God watch over you and your husband.
My wife and I have our 44th anniversary coming up in April-maybe
sometime after that we can do something. She is still working and
wants to keep going until after she turns 65 so we'll see.
God's Blessings

When will you be in Livingston, Tx? We have a camp in Woodville,Tx. and it's only about 30 minutes from Livingston, I would like to extend an invitation to meet you up there for lunch/dinner that is if it is not imposing. Are you'll visiting the Indian reservation up there?
My husbands family is from Maderia. they came to Boston in 1919. We know very little of his family, but I am working on it for him. His parents died in 1993. Thank you for responding to my e-mail. Good luck in your travels in Texas, hope you enjoy all of it.

Thanks Shirley. WE were RV'rs when we were younger and the kids were young. We have three sons who are all grown now.We had a motor home, which I told my wife that we should sell when we stop using it. That time came and we sold it . Then, we used my in laws travel trailer when they were not using it. That turned into a truck and camper and a ski boat for the next few years until my back gave out completely and I had to have another surgery. Now, I wish we had the motor home so we could take off again but that hasn't happened.

Anyway, what day is your anniversary? Our's is on the 14th of Apr. My wife's birthday is the 8th and mine the 25th. My first son, who died during delivery, would have been Apr. 10th. . So, April is a busy month for us.

Have a safe and happy trip.

Hi Carolyn
We are near Natchitoches, LA until Saturday and then will be going to Nacogdoches, TX.  We belong to the Escapees RV Club which has it's headquarters in Livingston, we will be there for a few days.  We would love to meet you for lunch or dinner.  I can let you know later when we know when we will be in Livingston or if Nacogdoches is closer for you.

Hi Cliff
We started out with a CJ-5 Jeep and tent, then pickup and 8' camper when our two boys were young.  Then shell camper for a short time and then back to pickup and 9' camper, class C 26' motorhome and now since 2003 class A 34' motorhome.  Our boys (men now) are also campers.  We have really enjoyed camping and RVing.  We went to Canada for one month when our boys were 8 and 10 in the 8' camper with and ice box hand pump water and no bathroom.  When we got the class C our youngest son wanted to know why we didn't have it when we went to Canada.  Of course by then he was almost out of college.

Our anniversary is April 24, it was the Sat. after Easter that year.  April is a busy month for your family.

Welcome to Texas! I hope you enjoy all there is to see and do in the
Lone Star State!
I'm not a native, but my husband and I both love it here.
Safe travels!

Thanks Maria
We were in Southern Texas before coming to Louisiana.  We spent time in Big Bend National Park, Del Rio where my husband spent 4 years in the Air Force and Padre Island National Seashore.  So as you can see we will be seeing a lot of Texas.  Have been enjoying this trip.  My husband is looking forward to Texas barbecue.
