I have run into a bit of a wall in trying to get information about ,my Great grandparents .

what is the best way to find out information before 1900 ?

Whom are your family? Have you tried the passenger lists arriving in Hawaii, New York, California?

Ancestry.com  and Familysearch.org are filled with pre 1900 records and easily searchable. 

Ancestry is about $40 a month

Familysearch is free. Registration is needed to view documents. 

In the Azores Islands the  Centro do Conhecimento has all parishes online and passports . Not searchable

Also in Azores the CITCEM site has searchable parish records for some of the islands and the mainland


For Madeira. the Regional archives




For Portugal mainland and the islands, The Torre do Tombo
