My maternal ancestors emigrated from Braganca to Hawaii back in the early 1900’s, working there for some years at a sugar plantation before moving to the continental U.S.

In researching them and their travels, I noticed that most of the Portuguese who emigrated from the continent to Hawaii seemed to come from the Braganca District, and that most of the Portuguese from other districts went elsewhere.  Could it be that the sugar plantation owners only advertised for workers in the Braganca District? Or, were there other/additional factors at work? Or is my impression on this mistaken?

Any information and/or insights on this will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Carolyn

Carolyn,

Of the Portuguese immigrant ships to Hawaii, only the Vapor Hansa in 1882 sailed from Lisbon,  the Braunfels in 1895 sailed from Oporto, and the Osteric in 1911 sailed from Lisbon.

All the other ships sailed from Madeira and Sao Miguel, or from Gibralter or other Spanish ports.

The labor contractors would select an area to recruit in, usually choosing an place with a depressed economy due to crop failure or political unrest.
