Thank you, Scott, for writing about dictation, it is an important activity cannot be neglected in English language classes. With my non-native students, I used the traditional dictation (sentence by sentence of a short text they have read it). But now I am very excited to use the dictogloss technique with my students. Because I have read a lot of articles about the advantages of integrating all the four skills of English language especially in tests and how it helps students to achieve their linguistic competences. But do you think the dictogloss technique will work with non-native students??
The most obvious task is to ask students to look at the examples of the language focus in the text and use them to complete rules about its use. Or they could try writing their own rules and then comparing them with a grammar reference.
