A good beginning! 20 people met at the library yesterday to discuss a celebration of Portsmouth's 375th anniversary next year. This group will be the core of an effort to get town committees, businesses and other organizations involved in planning and conducting events throughout the year. We will meet again in two weeks to get better organized and hear more ideas for events and fundraising from other Portsmouth volunteers. The key to this effort will be public support and involvement. Start recruiting now!

Doug,  I would like to create a Facebook page for the 375th.  It will be yet another way to publicize the events and especially the volunteer meetings to Portsmouth Residents.  Just something basic to get it started and then with committee input it can include calendar of events, sponsorship notifications, pictures of the events and so much more.

I also spoke  to Frankie Flowers the President of the ERI-4H.  He is interested in hearing more about the 375th and how 4H can become involved.

A recommendation from someone that works at the Middle School is to inform the Superintenant (which I know you did), music teachers at all schools especially the HS, art teachers at all schools, and the history teachers as well.  I would be willing to create a flyer that highlights the intentions of the committee for events but I believe we should also include some historical content that the teachers would be able to create a curriculum around.

A flyer would not cost anything except the printing costs and could be used to distribute to all business, organization and individuals in town.  A flyer (formated as a jpeg or PDF) could also be distributed via email.

I happy to help just let me know!

Hi Doug,  If it is possible to have a re-enactment during the 375th, when would you want it and do you have a specific event that you would like re-enacted?

No specific event but in 1777 and 1778, when the British occupied "Rhode Island" there was a British garrison located near the current Town Common and they used to trade cannon shots with Patriot batteries in Bristol. I'm wondering whether a reenactment of something lime this is feasible. Another place for a 1778 style reenactment might be at Fort Butts near the wind turbine.
