Not Sacred Harp, but potentially of interest.

This Sunday, December 21, at 3:37pm, there's a sing along Messiah happening at Westminster Presbyterian in NE (1624 NE Hancock Street)).

This would usually be our third Sunday singing time, but that has been rescheduled to Saturday (1:30 at Kennedy School, 2025 edition (Green/Ivey book)).

The Messiah sing along is free and they have scores available. I've done this several times and it's always been great fun.

Hi all,

To follow up Ruth's off-topic remark by one even *more* off-topic:

There's *also* a Sing-along Messiah the day before the one Ruth mentioned--Saturday, Dec. 20th.

What makes this post even more off-topic than Ruth's is that this event isn't even in your Rose City--it's at Zion Mennonite Church in Hubbard (vaguely near Woodburn).

What makes it worth mentioning, even given all that, is that it's *fantastic*.  I've been to lots of Sing-along Messiahs at a variety of "quality" levels--in concert halls, cathedrals, etc.  This one's in a tiny church in the middle of nowhere.  And the musicians are all family members.  And the soloists are all from the congregation.  And the choruses are all sung by the local Mennonite community, plus some folks like me who've stumbled across the tradition.  (They're of course super-welcoming to outsiders; it's not a denominational thing.)  And the conductor looks like Christopher Lloyd when he connects the wires that send Marty McFly back to 1985 (I say with admiration, not derision).  And it's free and there are tons of cookies.

The whole thing just exudes community... it's such a hoot... the singing is so strong while also so accommodating of rank beginners... I hate to make the comparison, but it's a lot like Sacred Harp--you arrive and feel a twittering energy; you leave feeling giddy.

The only downside is that you'll have put put up with seeing some of us Corvallis Sacred Harp singers who make the journey each year.  On the upside, you can meet my daughter; this'll be her second year, and she likes this one better than the fancy one at the Beaverton Episcopal Church.  (I think, though, that may be because of the cookies).

Not that you shouldn't go to the Westminster one; in fact I'd do both if we weren't leaving Sunday to visit family.  But it'd be great to see some of you in Hubbard if you can make it.  If not, I'll look forward to singing with again soon--in PDX... or maybe Corvallis?

One might be able to leave the Saturday singing at Kennedy School a few minutes early (ok, 15 minutes) to get to Hubbard in time for this--  in case anyone is interested in checking it out and having a LOT of singing this weekend ✨

Hi Mark!

What time is the one on the 20th? I don't see it listed on their website.

Thanks for the info!

The plan I've been developing over the course of today is: shape note at Kennedy School 1:30-3:00, then to Hubbard for Messiah.
I can provide a ride to anyone who wants to travel with me.
This SYOM was on my radar last year but I couldn't go. I'm on track to attend this year.
I've never done a Sing Your Own Messiah, but my mom who taught me to love singing alto parts, did it a couple of times without me.
The internet claims that SYOM generally lasts about an hour and a half.
Can anyone confirm that?

I would also like to go. I have room in my jeep for anyone else who would like a ride.

I will either take Cornelia home early or see if someone else could take her home at 3:30. She lives just a few blocks from Kennedy School. Any takers?
