Hello singers,

For those joining us this weekend at the Portland Art Museum singing this coming weekend, here are all of the details.

Sacred Harp at Portland Art Museum

Saturday 11/22 and Sunday 11/23 3:30-4:30

Museum Entry

We have entry bracelets for a total of 50 singers (over two days) who signed up on the singers list, and chairs will be limited to 40 singers each day. Once you have a purple entry bracelet, you can enjoy the museum's full weekend of events.

If you didn't sign up and aren't on the list, you can still show up at 2:15 on Sunday-- as we should be able to allow a few more singers in that day. You can show up Saturday as well, but the museum is sold out, AND we have a very full slate of singers-- so you may need to hover.

Arrival Time and Location (note: new meet-up location):

Meet at the Mark Building (located on SW Park Ave, in between Main St. and Madison)  at 2:15 for your entry bracelet. We will be shepherded through the singing space (for review) and then to the Green Room (Stevens Room, Level 0R on South Wing).

If you arrive late, tell museum staff you are with the Sacred Harp singers and you need to get to Stevens Room, Level 0R. You can text me as well 971-930-2153.

Green Room

We have a room to ourselves, and there will be SNACKS. Hang out in or nearby so we can get to the singing space and start on time, etc.

There is also a beautiful and trippy exhibit just down the stairs from the Green Room– but be aware there are flashing lights that might be triggering to some who have light sensitivities.

Singing Location

At 3:10, we'll move into the singing space, which is called 213 Schnitzer Court Overlook. Basically, it's the upper landing of the main building, right in front of the American and European Art Galleries.

We're NOT allowed water or beverages in the gallery space, so bring lozenges. If you feel panicked about this, let me know– there's a secret janitor's closet where we could stash a water bottle or two, in an emergency.

Singing Format

We've agreed to consider this as similar to one of our regular weekly singings, but with a lot more people and a bit of extra sparkle, because we want to sound good for such a big event.

We will sing Open Call, like we do at our regular weekly singing, so a couple suggestions:

  • Let's do our best to keep the energy moving

  • If possible, plan to have 3-4 songs in mind you'd like to lead, to avoid long pauses

  • Share the space and try to make sure everyone who wants has a chance to lead

  • Feel free to jump in to lead again if it feels the pause is too long

  • Let's aim for more familiar songs and old favorites

Seating

We're limited to 40 seats in the hollow square, so please be open to rotating (if it's possible or needed) so that any standing singers and guests have a chance to sit in the square, at least one of the days. If you're singing both days and have capacity to offer a seat to someone else on Saturday, that might be helpful. If you need a seat for health reasons either day, please ask.

We do currently have a few more singers signed up on Saturday than we have chairs, but we all have the option to stand and sing-- so I think it will work out.

Front benches

Take a front row seat if you're prepared to pay attention, beat time and help the group stay together-- especially helpful with a big singing in an unfamiliar location.

This is not a "performance" however…

it's possible museum guests will applaud between songs-- we can't stop them. We may decide to say a few words to the crowd about our tradition, but that will depend on the energy of the space when we get there.

We will sing from 3:30-4:30.

What else?

I hear there's a social on Saturday afterwards-- more details on that soon. ✨

Questions? Email me, or text on the day of the event: 971-930-2153.

Do any out of town guests still need housing? We may have another spot available-- email me for more information.

Appreciation to everyone who is planning to be part of this-- it will be an adventure. Looking forward to singing with you!

thank you,

tamara

I forgot to specify: we'll be singing from the new 2025 Revision of the Sacred Harp. There will be some loaner books available.

Hi Tamara
This is Carolyn  C
I signed up to sing, and will join in on Saturday  at the museum.
I can't remember  if I also signed up for the other day.
I can ONLY do Saturday, if that might open it up for someone else ( if I had signed up for both)

Is there anything special
Which you want us to wear?

Thanks,
Carolyn  C
THANK YOU,
CAROLYN

Hello All!
There will be a social on Saturday at my house following the singing. I will be getting pizzas and beverages for everyone.
I think it will be at least 5:30 or 6:00 before I get back home after the singing and pizza run, so don’t show up too early!
2531 SE Ankeny St.
I hope to see many of you there.

Great singing yesterday! We had PLENTY of time (even with a fire drill/museum evacuation) so today I'll meet folks in front of the Mark Building at 2:30, for those who signed up and still need bracelets and/or who weren't here yesterday.

The museum has asked singers to be there early (2:30) but if you know where to go, just meet us in the green room no later than 3pm: Stevens Room, level 0R.

Wow, Tamara,  thank you for all the organizing and work to make the singing at the museum happen!

It was lots of fun, it sounded great, and a lot of people learned about us.  Yay!!

Aww shucks, y'all are the best! It was a pleasure, and I think we all did really well!

Big appreciation to everyone for chipping in, supporting this and especially for reading the full emails, lol. This is a rare and amazing group, and it's an honor to be amongst you.

Here's a thank you from Jared Mees, who initiated this collaboration:

What an amazing weekend. Thank you to everyone. Each of you were a joy and the beauty of a community gathering around music and art filled my heart and thousands of others. The art you make is important. Can’t wait until next time.
