WA PENINSULA WEEKEND
-
Friday, June 27: as part of the all day weekend will be a casual social singing from the Cooper Sacred Harp at the Fort Worden bunkers in Port Townsend 6-8:30 pm. Some loaners will be provided, but bring your Cooper book if you have one!
-
For folks who have not been to the park, it's a beautiful old military base and state park. There are above and below ground bunkers that make for very special places to sing in. We will be singing in the walkable bunkers by the lighthouse.
-
Directions: Enter Fort Worden at the main gate, drive to the 4 way stop past the tennis courts on your right and turn right. At the T, turn left down the hill. Go past the RV campground, and turn left into the parking lot with the big trees. If you arrive at
the lighthouse you've gone too far 🙂
-
Follow the approximately 200 ft gravel path to the main above ground bunker structure, we will most likely be singing on the ground floor.
-
Carpool if you can, or if you have a DISCOVER PASS be sure to bring it and display it to avoid a fine. The park is requiring them for day use. It is $30 for a year or $10 for one day.
-
BYO chair if possible, a camping chair will do. We will bring some chairs for folks who don't have them
-
Bring warm layers! even though it will likely be warm out, in the structure it can be chilly
-
While these bunkers are open air and above ground, you may want a headlight / reading light just in case if it's hard for you to read in dim conditions!
Saturday, June 28: The Quilcene All-Day :
Please join us in Quilcene, Washington for an All-Day singing from the Denson revision of the Sacred Harp. We will sing from 10:00am until approximately 3 pm, with registration opening at 9:30 am and a dinner on the grounds potluck mid-day. The singing will
be held at the historic Old Quilcene Theater -- also known as the Gray Coast Guildhall -- at 11 Old Church Road, Quilcene, Washington. We will have a social Saturday, details forthcoming.
We will be requiring a rapid Covid test for the Saturday singing. Please stay home if you are feeling at all unwell!
You will be missed but this care allows us all to sing together safely and with peace of mind.
Quilcene is 1.5 hours north of Olympia, 25 minutes south of Port Townsend, and ~2 hours northwest of Seattle (depending
on route). SeaTac is the closest airport. It is pretty easy to take the Light Rail train from the airport to the Bainbridge Island ferry dock, take the ferry, and take the bus or get a ride on the other side.
**We live in a rural area!!** Please consider renting a car or be sure to coordinate carpooling in advance. Camping will
be available near Port Townsend (a 30 minute drive away from the singing). There are many other camping opportunities, Airbnbs, and VRBOs in the Quilcene and Port Townsend areas, as well as the Mt. Walker Inn, which is booked through Vacasa.
For housing and other singing questions and concerns, please reach out to olypensacredharp -at- gmail -dot- com
For those of you that love art and craft-making. There will be screen-printing equipment and supplies for transferring the beautiful 3rd Quilcene All Day poster image to whatever fabric object you bring to the Social on Saturday night. I plan to
bring a t-shirt or two. Perhaps others might want to bring a satchel or cloth bag to imprint.
Thank you Karen Willard for forwarding this info to me.
Hope to see you all there. I am really looking forward to this.
