I reviewed notes from the spring Basic Disaster Life Support Training this week. This is a very valuable next level training for active NETs. I cannot recommend this enough! It covers ALL kinds of hazards, and incident response. Its free, so be looking for one next year   http://www.ndlsf.org/index.php/courses/bdls

So, what occurs to me is that the NETS, being few in number (tho mighty) will be far outnumbered by enthusiastic SUVs. (spontaneous unaffiliated volunteers), and that we can make the most use of our knowledge and training by getting proficient in managing these folks.
There is a section 800.65 in the NET guidelines outlining protocols, but a  hands on training would go a long way to building confidence and proficiency. I am looking to gauge interest in this, and then take it to Jeremy.

I welcome any thoughts on this. suzy murphy

I think SUV management will be very, very important after a major disaster. I also feel that NETs are not prepared for SUVs.

Having read the NET Guidelines and the SUV document, I feel that the procedures are unrealistic. From my two experiences with SUVs, I know that they will have little patience for filing out forms and waiting around.....they are going to want to act.

NETs need to be able to ID the tasks that SUVs can safely and quickly do and get them going.  A failure to adequately utilize SUVs can have serious repercussions for NETs and for PBEM.

Here's a link to a job aid that NETs can print and give out to SUVs who assist them during a response.
