My core team has been discussing holding a hexayurt building demo/workshop this summer in an outdoor location.  If you don't know about hexayurts, you can find a lot of information about them at http://hexayurt.com

They are used at the Burning Man festival as shelters, because they are easily transported, very well insulated from heat and cold, and are not terribly expensive or difficult to construct.  They would be ideal as long-term post-disaster living quarters, and as good structures for NET teams to work out of in any kind of weather.

One of my team members (Adam Rothstein) has written articles about hexayurts and has one himself that he can demonstrate.  I also have a friend (Molly Gray) who is willing to demonstrate her and boyfriend's hexayurt at the event.  We would make hexayurt schematics available for folks to take home.

I am submitting an application today to the Portland Parks Bureau tto acquire the Woodlawn Amphitheater at Woodlawn Park as the venue for Sunday, July 31 in the afternoon.  I should know by next week whether we have it.

I would like to do this as a cooperative project with of the North Portland NETs on behalf of the Portland NETs.  Teams could also use the event as a recruiting tool.  We could have NETs bring  tables and materials to set up and distribute on behalf their neighborhood teams.  The AROs could also use the event in the same way.

It would also be a good venue for attracting Burning Man veterans into the NETs, many of whom already have an interest in emergency and disaster preparation.  The Burning Man festival happens annually in August, so the event is well timed to attract folks who are preparing for it.
