I am writing to you as a loyal and satisfied user of the Canon MP240 printer. This device has served me faithfully since its purchase and continues to function perfectly for my needs. However, I was recently disappointed to learn that Canon has decided to discontinue updating drivers for this model.
I understand that technological progress often means moving towards newer models. However, this decision is particularly disheartening for several reasons. Firstly, the planned obsolescence of devices leads to excessive consumption, which does not align with the principles of sustainability and environmental responsibility. Secondly, on a personal note, I currently do not have the financial means to invest in a new printer. The MP240 meets my current needs perfectly, and being forced to replace it due to software support issues seems unfair.
My specific concern at this moment is the lack of driver support for Windows 11 for the MP240. As the operating systems evolve, it becomes crucial for users like me to have compatible drivers to ensure our hardware continues to function effectively.
I appeal to your consideration to revisit this decision. By continuing to support the MP240 with necessary driver updates, especially for Windows 11, Canon would not only demonstrate its commitment to customer satisfaction and loyalty but also its respect for sustainable and ethical practices.
Thanks for letting us know what Canon product you've got. The PIXMA MP240 is an older model which we have retired. While that means that Canon USA no longer offers direct support for it, your friends here in the Canon Community are welcome to offer suggestions!
You can also speak with a Canon Upgrade Program specialist to help you score a modern replacement that would meet your current needs at a discount. You can reach them weekdays and Saturdays at 1-866-443-8002.
Hope this helps!
Thank you for your response, but I must express my profound dissatisfaction. The decision not to provide driver updates for the MP240 printer, especially for Windows 11, only exacerbates my concern about your company's practices in sustainability and environmental responsibility.
Unfortunately, your response confirms a trend towards planned obsolescence, leading to excessive consumption and overlooking environmental impact. This goes against the principles of sustainability, especially in a global context where environmental preservation is crucial. Furthermore, my financial situation does not allow me to purchase a new printer model. It is disappointing to see a company of your stature not considering the real needs of its customers, indirectly forcing them to replace still-functional equipment.
As a result, I am compelled to reconsider my support for Canon. I will no longer recommend your products and will not consider purchasing another Canon printer in the future. This decision is taken with regret but reflects my stance on responsible and environmentally friendly business practices. I hope Canon will reevaluate its policies in the future to better meet its customers' expectations and current environmental challenges.
I've found a solution. I've downloaded the latest driver for win 8.1 (md64-win-mp240-1_02-ea24). Before install, go to settings -> compatibility and choose win 7 (win 8 was not working for me). Save and run as administrator. Once it finished power off the printer, remove from usb. Plug back and switch on. In printer settings I've switched off that windows detect the default printer. Now its working. For scanning the win 11 scanner program works just fine.
The printer is 10 yrs old and has reached the end of its support lifecycle. Parts are no longer being manufactured. Canon doesn't manufacture every part needed to build a product; some are sourced from 3rd parties. If a company stops making them, Canon can no longer service the device.
10 years is a very reasonable amount of time for software and hardware support. Canon, Epson, Sharp, Dell, Microsoft, Google and Apple (for example) all use a similar model. 10 years is typical, an industry standard.
NGotti did bring up a good point. Drivers written for an earlier version of windows or MAC (might) work with a newer version of the OS. Not in every case depending on the architecture, but its worth a try.
Totally agree with You... 10 year for a printer is way more than expected (for me at least). Most of the electronics these days barely make after the guarante period. But here not the availability of parts was questioned, rather the solution provided. Saying sorry, your printer is obsolete but You can buy a new one... This was done on purpose or with intent. But hey, they left it open; Community are welcome to offer suggestions, so here I am, providing solution, what could be done by them as they more of an expert than me for sure :).
My dead computer that ran on Mojave printed and scanned just fine with my Pixma MP240. My new macbook air running on a slightly updated Mojave will not print. Cannon does not support my printer anymore, so no driver available, but my dead machine printed just fine, except now it is dead. Any of you with an older printer and a brand spanking new machine? I really don't want to buy a new printer. I just need a driver download and will use my usb connecter (yes I had to buy a gizmo to plug in a usb on this macbook air)
When I add the printer, under the "choose a driver" pull down menu is this text: Software for this printer isn't available from Apple. Contact the printer's manufacturer for the latest software. I did contact Cannon and they don't support Mojave 10.14.
Make sure your printer is turned on and it's plugged into your Mac via the dongle. Click the + button in the Print & Scan System pane and you should be able to add your printer via USB and MacOS will download the drivers automatically.
A print server will cost more than a new printer, so buy a new printer. When you do, be sure it specifically indicates that it is AirPrint compatible. There are literally thousands of AirPrint printers and multifunction devices from which to choose.
Hey so I was able to print and scan with the PIXMA MP230 drivers. The only thing I can't do is pick wether I want to print in color or in black in white. It's been printing in color and I was wondering if you can help me with this?
Checking the MP240 with other distribution, Linux Mint 2.1.2, on USB stick showed a fully working printer (tested) from sratch. Probably their stable version still holds the needed driver, but then it will still get broken with next version I guess.
So, why does a fully working MP240 get broken on Garuda Cinnamon without me replacing or updating my driver? I do not really get how this worked out and I do not have any clue how to fix that. Any help would be appreciated.
Scanner Issues is right for MP287 in Ubuntu 12.04. Printer is fine but even after downloading and installing canon scanner drivers scanner is not detected. Tried loading Sane backend but no luck. Anybody able to get it to work?
Same thing is happening with me.Printer is working. In my case scanner driver for MP287 is not going to be installed. Then I googled a lot and did not work at all.The default scan is also not detecting the scanner. How to make this work on Ubuntu 12.04??
