After creating the macOS USB Installer you'll use vmware-rawdiskCreator to create a raw disk VMDK of the macOS USB Installer to manually add to the configuration file of the macOS High Sierra virtual machine following the directions in: Creating a raw disk VMDK and adding it to the Virtual machine in Fusion (2097401)
This answer is the accepted answer, and AFAIK, it is also a correct answer. However, I need to say that I have not actually worked through the entire procedure given in the answer. I got bogged down in the details of using VMware's vmware-rawdiskCreator, and could not complete the procedure.
Finally, copy the .vmwarevm file from the High Sierra Mac (the real, physical one) to the Catalina Mac. Once you have the file positioned where you want it, right-click on it, and select the option to open the file with VMware Fusion.

I previously created an alternative approach (first alternative approach) to the accepted answer which is here. This answer - the one that follows - is a second alternative approach for meeting the objective:
Vmware sees Apple iPhone in devices list, but without any success once I am pressing Connect (Disconnect from Host). Moreover, once I unplug my iPhone from USB cable, it restarts. This behavior happens each time I try to connect it to mac osx (on vmware).
all followed all the steps but when it comes to powering on the macos the vmware word infront of a black background appears then the apple logo but after a few seconds some words pop and at the end it says that macos not yet setup

Hi! I am not able to fit the VM to guest window even after installing and reinstalling vmware tools, I was abe to do so on the more recent versions but they run quite slow due to my hardware limitations
I tried using latests Virtual Box (5.1.28) and current high sierra public release.
Now, there is no Locked Files folder inside of macOS Install Data, so i am not able to to boot to the new installer. Any clues?
I have almost the same computer settings, but my virtual box works fine without any problems. I think that you need to change something, namely this detail: vmware port group. I once met a similar situation with my friend, and almost the same thing happened with his Mac. That's when he started using the vmware port group. He told me about it after fixing the problem, but it turned out to be very interesting, so I began to study it in more detail. I hope this will be useful to you
