Losing Data?

I've been using Portable Python and SciTe on a thumb drive for a lot
of programming lately, and I'm finding my files corrupt after using
them. I lost six hours of work on Saturday, and this morning I opened
my files to find chunks of code missing, several lines just gone.

Is it possible that SciTe is eating my code? Or do thumb drives
overheat and lose data? So far it's only my Python scripts that seem
to be losing data. My regular portable apps work just fine.

It's getting very frustrating... I'm backing up my files, but not on
the same thumb drive so when I'm away from my home machine, I don't
have them to restore my work.

Any suggestions or hints?

Hi there,

I understand your pain. It always sucks to loose work. I don't think SciTE is causing the problems, it is very, very stable editor. I would check your USB drive for errors, probably you can find some tools to do this online.

Personally I'm using SciTE for over 2 years as portable editor and never had any problems like you describing it. However you can try to switch to another editor (if your trust in SciTE is gone). You can try Notepad++ portable http://portableapps.com/news/2008-08-07_-_notepadpp_portable_5.0.3 or even better for python development excellent editor PyScripter. Here some help how can you make pyscripter to work with portable python: http://pyscripter.googlepages.com/portablepython

I would also recomend some online source control system then you don't need to think about backing up on other drive etc. For example I'm using assembla.com for some of my projects and it is great. You get wiki, issue management, subversion, and bunch of other cool tools for free !!! on this way you can always get latest version of your work wherever you are.

hope this helps

keep pythoning!

Thanks for thd tips. I've played with both, and they look nice.
PyScripter looks amazing for features, but crashes with every key
fifth key stroke on a brand new installation... not sure what's going
on with that.

Oh wow... things just got stranger...

I opened my file and now it's got code from an entirely different
script, like it read an import statement and included portions ofthe
file itself...

I now suspect my USB drive is off kilter somehow.

Looks like you need new USB drive :) you can try another test and copy everything to your local hard drive and work from there for a few hours and see how it works then.

kind regards,

Yeah, it's come to that. This thing isn't that old, either. It now
refuses to save data to the drive, causing a "Delayed Write Error" and
then tells me the drive is completely empty. this is after I formatted
the thing, ran check disk, and reinstalled everything but Portlable
Python (the download link slogged off...it wouldn't even give me an
estimate of how long it would take to download.)

Even worse, I can't find anyone who claims this jump drive exists...
the company website doesn't list it, the store from which I purchased
it doesn't have it...

Five years ago I had a MicroAdvantage 128MB flash drive. It survived
multiple trips through the wash and the damn thing still works to this
day. It's just too small to carry anything useful.

thanks for the hints at other products. I really like SciTe and will
go back to it as soon as I get a thumb drive that works.
