Dear All,

I'm pleased to announce that there's a new release of Portable GIS, v 5.6, which updates QGIS to 2.14.1 and includes Geoserver 2.8 for the first time.

Go to http://archaeogeek.com/portable-gis.html for more information and download links.

As always please let me know of any problems.

Regards

Jo

I am having problems with the installation - during the install, it asks me at the end whether I want to open the readme file and the control panel, and I say yes to both, but only the readme file opens. The portablegis.exe is never created in the root directory. What has happened, and how do I get the control panel to be created? I'm on Windows 7 64 bit, 8GB RAM, and plenty of hard drive space. Suggestions?

Hi Jan,

Are you installing to the C drive or a USB stick? I have never tested installing to the C drive so if that's the case, I'm wondering if your computer is blocking the extraction of the executable for security reasons.

Thanks

Jo

Hi,

I'm still trying to work this out for you. Can you post a screenshot of the root directory where portableGIS is installed, eg the one with the USBGIS folder in it?

If I can't figure it out, I'll send the menu executable through to you.

Jo

The problem was in fact my antivirus seeing the portablegis.exe as malware. My antivirus also saw several other components as malware, so I think it broke other items as well. I have to now track down what they were and white list them. The problem is that when I go to use this on a computer where I don't have antivirus admin control (like at work), it's going to be likely that antivirus will do the same thing, making this tool less than useable. I can send you a list of what gets detected as malware if that helps.

Yes, I have the same problem attempting to install on either the C drive or a USB stick. After you comment I did do a search on my Webroot Antivirus and saw it blocked the portablegis.exe as a W32.Downloader.gen malware. I'll try again with the antivirus turned off. I'm going to guess that will solve the problem.
Cheers,
-Jan

Thanks Jan,

Sending a list of components would be helpful. I'll have to do some research on whether there's anything I can do to get around them being detected, other than flagging it up to people. My immediate thought is that if it is possible to stop components being flagged as malware then there's nothing to stop real malware developers doing the same thing- but anyway I will certainly take a look and see what I can do.
