Not much to say, installed PortableGis on USB drive and launched the app. Clicks on buttons invariably resulted in nothing happening. Quit and launched again. Same result but a couple resulted in the launch of a CMD, which I took as launching another application, but nothing happened, even after about a minute or so. Installed on USB and used on a laptop running Win 8 but will try on a Win 7 machine later. 6Gb ram on Win 8 machine so no memory problem, 2g processor. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Hi John,

Thanks for trying and reporting for me. Firstly I don't have access to a Windows 8 machine so I have no guarantee that it will work, but... let's see what we can do...

The second thing is- which buttons result in nothing happening? In the desktop module part or the server module? The server module will only launch command windows- they tell you whether the server modules are working. In the desktop module, QGIS and PgAdmin3 should launch, but depending on the read and write speed of your USB stick they may take *quite a long time* to load the actual GUI. Again the command windows themselves should tell you whether there are errors or not.  Also if it's still waiting to load QGIS, for example, then quitting the menu will not quit the qgis process, so it's worth loading your task manager to see whether it's actually loading the executables or not.

On the subject of loading to a directory rather than a root drive- it's a common request, but requires a fair bit of re-writing of the portable code, so I'm hoping to include it in the next release, but (pleading sympathy) it's a spare time thing rather than a job so it depends on me finding some time to work on it really!

Regards

Jo

PS I'm unlikely to be able to help more until Tuesday, as I am away over the weekend, but will come back to this when I get back, if you are still struggling.

Hello,
just tried on Win 7 and it works for me. So far I have briefly tested only QGIS on one computer, will try more and repot back. QGIS even starts pretty fast. Big disappointment for me was that GRASS plugin is missing, though, because that is the thing I use the most for analysis, I have lots of data on the USB stick in GRASS database. Is it the same with version 4.2? Probably will revert back to v 4 because of that.

PS: Just found, that GRASS program itself is part of the install, the directory F:\usbgis\apps\qgis2\apps\grass contains installation of *both* GRASS 6.4.3 and 6.4.4 every one having ~85 MB. But GRASS plugin is not showing in the interface, so these dirs are probably just taking up space.. Or is there a way to run GRASS from there? The same seems to be true for Orfeo Toolbox (787 MB) and Saga (27 MB).
Experimentally, I tried to remove all their respective subdirectories (almost 1GB of space) from F:\usbgis\apps\qgis2\apps and the control panel and QGIS still seem to work fine.

Hi Tomas,

Very little configuration of QGIS has been done other than to make it run in a portable manner, so I can't comment on whether or not the GRASS plugin is properly configured- my assumption is that it needs to be enabled in QGIS somehow. I will take a look at what can be done.

Yes, normally the plugin is not enabled by default and you have to enable it via Plugins menu. The problem is, it is not showing there among the installed plugins, and it is not possible to download these pre-installed plugins. The Orfeo and Saga apps I mentioned are normally used via plugin named Sextante, or Processing in later GRASS versions (not sure in which version the name change occured).
Thanks for looking into it.
