The British Academy Film Awards, more commonly known as the BAFTA Film Awards, is an annual award show hosted by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) to honour the best British and international contributions to film. The ceremonies were initially held at the flagship Odeon Cinema in Leicester Square in London, before being held at the Royal Opera House from 2007 to 2016. From 2017 to 2022, the ceremony was held at the Royal Albert Hall in London before moving to the Royal Festival Hall for the 2023 ceremony. The statue awarded to recipients depicts a theatrical mask.

The stated charitable purpose of BAFTA is to "support, develop and promote the art forms of the moving image, by identifying and rewarding excellence, inspiring practitioners, and benefiting the public". In addition to high-profile awards ceremonies, BAFTA runs a year-round programme of educational events, including film screenings and tribute evenings. BAFTA is supported by a membership of about 6,000 people from the film, television, and video game industries.

The ceremony previously took place in April or May, but since 2001 it has been held in February in order to precede the Academy Awards. Most of the awards are open to all nationalities, though there are awards for Outstanding British Film and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Producer or Director. Only UK films are eligible for the categories of The British Short Film and British Short Animation awards.

The award ceremony is held in London. From 2000 to 2007, the ceremonies took place at the flagship Odeon Leicester cinema in Leicester Square. Between 2008 and 2016, the ceremonies took place at the Royal Opera House. The 70th Awards in 2017, and subsequent ceremonies up to the 75th Awards in 2022, were held at the Royal Albert Hall.[7][8]

This is a list of groups, organizations, and festivals that recognize achievements in cinema, usually by awarding various prizes. The awards sometimes also have popular unofficial names (such as the "Oscar" for Hollywood's Academy Awards), which are mentioned if applicable. Many awards are simply identified by the name of the group presenting the award.[clarification needed]

Awards have been divided into four major categories: critics' awards, voted on (usually annually) by a group of critics; festival awards, awards presented to the best film shown in a particular film festival; industry awards, which are selected by professionals working in some branch of the movie industry; and audience awards, which are voted by the general public.

Currently the Warner Bros. Pictures Group Co-Chair and CEO, Michael De Luca (Fort Worth) will be honored for his impact on global cinema as a creative producer and executive. With over three decades in the business he has been nominated three times for an Academy Award for Best Picture of the Year (THE SOCIAL NETWORK, MONEYBALL, and CAPTAIN PHILLIPS), and three times for an Emmy Award (for producing both the 89th and the 90th Academy Awards and for producing Escape At Dannemora). Additionally, he has been nominated four times for a Producers Guild of America Award.

"All Quiet," a visceral depiction of life and death in the World War I trenches based on Erich Maria Remarque's classic novel, won Edward Berger the best director award. Its other trophies included adapted screenplay, cinematography, best score, best sound and best film not in English.

Britain's film academy introduced changes to increase the awards' diversity in 2020, when no women were nominated as best director for the seventh year running and all 20 nominees in the lead and supporting performer categories were white.

This year there were 11 female directors up for awards across all categories, including documentary and animated films. But just one of the main best-director nominees was female: Gina Prince-Bythewood for "The Woman King."

"West Side Story" star Ariana DeBose opened the show by performing "Sisters are Doin' it for Themselves," with an added rap shoutout to some of the nominated women, including Blanchett, Michelle Yeoh and Viola Davis.

The harsh world outside showbiz intruded on the awards when Bulgarian journalist Christo Grozev, who works for investigative website Bellingcat, said he was now allowed to attend the awards because of a risk to public security. He features in "Navalny," a film about jailed Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny that won the best documentary BAFTA.

This year, the competition was fierce, but it was French director Justine Triet's Anatomy of a Fall that came out on top, with awards for Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Film and Best Actress for Sandra Hüller.

Sandra Hüller also stars in The Zone of Interest, a chilling film about the family life of the commander-in-chief of Auschwitz which shows humanity in all its horror, without showing anything of the camp.

Airing for the first time on television Nov. 14 at 8:00PM ET/delayed PT, the "Hollywood Film Awards," which mark the beginning of awards season, will be hosted by multi-talented actress, musician and talk show host Queen Latifah.

In the year 1998 Indian Cinema industry witnessed the creation of Zee Cine Awards (or "ZCA" for short). The mega star-studded event was inaugurated in the hub of Indian cinema industry, Mumbai. Zee Cine Awards are initiated by Zee Network Television Limited, a Mumbai-based TV station. Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL) was previously known as Zee Telefilms Limited (ZTL) which branched out into 4 singular entities in 2006.

The ceremony took a further step forward and went international in the year 2004. The first international ceremony was held in Dubai. The following year (i.e. on 26th March 2005) the show was held in London. Zee Networks held the ceremony in Mauritius and Malaysia for the year 2006 and 2007 respectively. On 26th April 2008, Zee Cine Awards again took off to London at Excel Arena, Docklands.

The evening's first award winner, Danielle Deadwyler, who received the Breakthrough Performance Award for the movie "Till," described the award show hustle and bustle perfectly, "It's glamorous chaos," she said.

A hot topic backstage as the stars step down the seven or eight stairs into the waiting arms of their handlers who move them through a media maze, are the physical trophies they are now carrying. There are two types of awards. One is a tall bronze spirally actor, standing on a globe by late artist John Kennedy. It's pretty cool. The other one is a little more artistic. It looks like a glass cactus with Fritos sticking out of it. It's more of an acquired taste, but is one of the popular glass works of artist Dale Chihuly.

Jamie Lee Curtis asked a stranger, Desert Sun photographer Jay Calderon to be specific, to take a photo with her cell phone of her and "Everything, Everywhere All At Once" co-stars Michelle Yeoh and Stephanie Hsu when they exited the stage (after Yeoh took home the International Star Award). Curtis had it all planned out and had just the right background, she showed Jay how her phone was all set for the photo. And just as Jay was about to take the shot, Cate Blanchett walked by and jumped into the photo. Fun backstage stuff!

Brian Tyree Henry, the actor best known for the TV show "Atlanta" (and who is getting Oscar buzz for his work in the film "Causeway" this year), was presenting an award Thursday night, and he poked fun at the sort of cattle-call nature of the photo shoots backstage. He had a small hand-held fan he used between shots to dry away sweat, and when he was in front of his final photographic firing squad, one of the photographers said "Look into the lens" and he said with mock outrage, "Which one, there are like 90 of you."

Keanu, who played bass guitar for the now-defunct band Dogstar, performed with them at the awards show. He and his band mates - Bret Domrose and Robert Mailhouse - were then called on stage to present the award to Preity. Watch the video here:

The ceremony honours the achievements of European cinema in the main categories (Film, Documentary, Animated Feature Film, Short Film, Discovery, Director, Actress, Actor, Screenwriter) and welcomes special guests and representatives of the European Film Academy, such as the current President Agnieszka Holland and board members Chair Mike Downey, Nina Hoss, Baltasar Kormakur and many more. The different categories will be presented by internationally renowned talents.

Academy Award winner Damien Chazelle (Babylon) and Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman) will each receive Auteur Awards for their directorial accomplishments, while Michael Morris (To Leslie) will receive the First Feature Award. Two-time Academy Award winner Jańusz Kaminski (The Fabelmans) and Academy Award nominated Rachel Morrison (Seberg) will receive Lumiere Awards in recognition of their career work in the field of Cinematography. Filmmaker/creator Sam Levinson and cinematographer Marcell Révwill accept the TV Series of the Year Award on behalf of the acclaimed A24/HBO production Euphoria.

Additional honorees include: Fine arts photographer/director Tyler Shields, who is currently directing the first TV series (Chapter 51) to utilize every motion picture film format in one show; choreographer/director Matty Peacock whose work includes music films for Shawn Mendes, Billie Eilish, and Selena Gomez; the historic Hollywood Legion Theater which offers state-of-the-art 35mm and 70mm film projection; 600 Black Women, an organization founded by cinematographer Chris Wairegi, whose mission is to help increase inclusivity and awareness for black female camera crew and publicists in the industry, and award-winning, global post-production house Company 3, whose acclaimed color artists have contributed to countless productions shot on film.
