During that process I would have to re-install AutoCAD inventor suite from disk (6 disks to be precise). Is there anything I have to do in regards to the licensing? I thought I would need to DE-activate the license somehow.
You can try to install and active on the new machine but it all depends on the history of this serial #. It may not be valid anymore.. The problem you're going to run into is that there's no access to the service packs and hot fixes that resolve issue with that version. So in the end if you do get it activated the end user could still run into issues that can't be resolved.
In addition to Mark's advice, don't count on physical media for installers - "retired" software can be removed from automated download systems, and a major disaster like a fire can destroy the discs/thumb drives/paper invoices/etc. Always back up the installers for your software, including SPs, hotfixes, serial numbers, etc. using the same disaster recovery procedures you've got for your drawings and other files. That way you're covered for everything from a simple re-install (like you've got) to a major incident (which hopefully doesn't happen).
Regarding the licensing, only activations are tracked. You are allotted a small number of automated online codes after which you need to submit a service request for them to send you manual activation ones. Be thankful they don't use a system to track deactivations - I've had that, and its a major PITA to manage.
