The Bay Area’s long-running Porchlight storytelling series returns to Litquake for this special edition, featuring tales on the theme of Tricks Up My Sleeve: Invisible Magic. With authors Derrick Brown, Dorothy Lazard, Dominic Lim, Ahmed Naji, Amy Schneider, and Dan Stuart. Co-hosted by Arline Klatte and Beth Lisick. Music by Marc Capelle. Derrick Brown has toured as a storyteller, comic and poet around the world. He has performed at Glastonbury, All Tomorrow's Parties, Berlin Intl. Lit Festival. He had a poetry book shop in Austin Texas, performed on The Tonight Show and is the founder and president of Write Bloody Publishing. He has published nine books of poetry. He runs the Your River Is Waiting workshop series as well as a writing workshop series for fellow veterans. He is also a comedian who combines poetry with his standup. It sounds terrible, I know. He has performed in venues around the world with comedians Kristin Schaal, David Cross, Bob Odenkirk, Jon Glaser, and H. Jon Benjamin. He's previously toured or headlined with Eugene Mirman, Kurt Braunohler, Kyle Kinane and tons of other weirdos. He lives in LA.
Dorothy Lazard was born in St. Louis and grew up in San Francisco and Oakland. A librarian for 40 years, she joined the staff of the Oakland Public Library in 2000. From 2009 until her retirement in 2021, she was the head librarian of OPL’s Oakland History Center, where she encouraged people of all ages and backgrounds to explore local history. Lazard was the 2023 recipient of the Oscar Lewis Award in Western History from the Book Club of California. Her new memoir is called What You Don't Know Will Make a Whole New World. She lives in Oakland.
Dominic Lim is author of the debut novel All the Right Notes, released earlier this year by Forever (Grand Central Publishing/Hachette). He is a member of the Writers Grotto and sits on their board of directors. Dominic holds a Master of Music from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, and has sung with numerous professional early music and choral ensembles. As a proud member of the Actors’ Equity Association he has performed Off-Broadway and in regional productions throughout the US. He supports his local writing community as a member of the Writers Grotto and as a co-host of San Francisco’s Babylon Salon.
Ahmed Naji is a writer, journalist, documentary filmmaker, and criminal. His novel Using Life (2014) made him the only writer in Egyptian history to have been sent to prison for offending public morality. Other published novels in Arabic are Tigers, Uninvited (2020) and The Happy End (2022). Naji has won several prizes, including a Dubai Press Club Award, and PEN/Barbey Freedom to Write Award. His newest work is entitled Rotten Evidence: Reading and Writing in an Egyptian Prison.
Amy Schneider is an American software engineer and recent Jeopardy! champion. Following an impressive 40-game winning streak, she became the most successful woman ever to compete on Jeopardy!. She is second all-time in the show’s history, trailing only Ken Jennings. Amy is also the first openly transgender contestant to qualify for the Tournament of Champions. She has been covered in People, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, USA TODAY, and more, and she has appeared on Good Morning America. Her new memoir is In the Form of a Question: The Joys and Rewards of a Curious Life.
Dan Stuart is an author, songwriter, and rambling reprobate currently living in Tucson, Arizona after a decade in Mexico City and Oaxaca. He was a founding member of Green on Red in the 80s, before leaving the music business in 1995 for a decade and a half. His comeback solo record in 2012 has the same title as his 2014 false memoir: The Deliverance of Marlowe Billings, both available through Cadiz Music, UK. Soon followed by Marlowe's Revenge, recorded with Mexico City's Twin Tones, and released in 2016 through Cadiz Music in UK & Europe and on Fluff & Gravy Records in the Americas. The Unfortunate Demise of Marlowe Billings, was released in the fall of 2018 along with a novel of the same name, both on Cadiz Music, UK. The last novel of the trilogy, Marlowe's Revenge, is out from R&R Press.
