Originally from Virginia, Christy Chan is an artist and filmmaker based in Richmond, CA. She grew up in a house with twelve people, three languages and one bathroom, so exchanging stories in lively, high-pressure settings is in her DNA. She makes large scale public art, as well as videos, installations and performance projects that make fun of racism and racists. In her day job as a commercial writer-director, she has probably convinced you to buy something to eat, wear, carry or flaunt that you don’t really need in order to attract a potential mate. Christy has told true stories about growing up with white supremacy on various NPR programs. Her favorite food is meat and she has never stormed the capital.
www.christychan.comMatthew Clark Davison is the author of Doubting Thomas (Amble Press '21). He is creator and teacher of The Lab :: Writing Classes with MCD, a non-academic school started in 2007 in a friend's living room. The textbook version of The Lab, co-authored by bestselling writer Alice LaPlante, will be published by W.W. Norton & Co. in 2022. His prose has been recently anthologized in Empty The Pews (Epiphany Publishing) and 580-Split; and published in or on LitHub,The Advocate, Guernica, The Atlantic Monthly, Foglifter, Exquisite Pandemic, and others. Matthew earned a BA and MFA in Creative Writing from SFSU, where he now teaches full-time in the BA/MA/MFA departments.
Originally from McAllen, Texas, Matt Gonzalez has engaged in a wide range of activities in the three decades he’s lived in San Francisco including politics (he’s a former city supervisor who ran for vice-president on the socialist Peace & Freedom Party ticket), art (he exhibits found paper collage work with Dolby Chadwick Gallery and co-directs the online Divers Gallery), publishing (he’s the publisher of FMSBW books), law (he’s the chief attorney of the SF public defender’s office), essay writing (he’s published over 100 articles on a range of subjects including art history and national politics), music (he played bass guitar in the bands John Heartfield and Hannah active in the late 90s), and poetry (he’s published two volumes of his own poetry titled The Violet Suitcase and Beauty Will Be Convulsive). He was one of the founders of the Free University of San Francisco and has previously taught at SFAI (a course on Art & Politics) and New College (where he taught Evidence to non-lawyers). Mostly though, he’s famous for telling a story at the very first Porchlight held at the Hemlock Tavern, many years ago.
My name is Jyairrah Martin. I am a wordsmith, a story, a storyteller. I am a story that tells, a poem that speaks, my ancestors wildest dreams that turned into reality. I am a graduating senior at SOTA and I will be attending The University of Chicago in the fall. I believe that words are power, I believe that words have the power to transform lives, and replace hate with love.
