Celebrate the release of Arion’s new collection of poems and stories that delve into the mad inner life of Edgar Allan Poe: "Phantasias". Inspired by the book’s themes and its visceral artwork by Natalie Frank, the Porchlight Storytelling Series has curated a surprising, one-of-a-kind program with an eclectic cast of characters.

UCSF cardiologist Dr. Howard Rosenfeld tells a story of a child’s heart, Shelley’s Cook’s Butoh dancers interpret the sonnet “Silence,” percussionist Karen Stackpole improvises on bells, poet Kim Shuck contemplates birds, and actor Catherine Castellanos reads excerpts from the work itself. The forbidding Poe Museum in Richmond, VA has even delivered its most prominent envoy, leading Poe expert Chris Semtner.

And yes, we will quoth The Raven.

After completing his undergraduate degree, medical school, internship, residency, and fellowship through Harvard University, Dr. Howard Rosenfeld has been a clinical pediatric cardiologist at Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland starting in 1994. He has served as the Director of the Fetal Echocardiography Services at BCHO since 2018, and the Co-Director of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology since 2016. Dr. Rosenfeld is also an avid bay swimmer and helps run an art-based camp at Black Rock City (Burning Man) that brings artists and performers from Valencia, Spain to participate in cross cultural art projects each year.

Sometimes called the “Poe Priest” or the “Curator of Curiosities,” the Edgar Allan Poe Museum’s curator Chris Semtner oversees the world’s largest collection of Poe’s possessions and has curated and designed critically acclaimed exhibits for museums and galleries across the country. His Poe Museum exhibits have brought that institution praise from TIME Magazine, USA Today, the New York Times, and many others. Semtner has also written several books and chapters on topics including Poe, visual art, cryptography, the paranormal, and crime fiction. In search of innovative ways to bring Poe to new audiences, Semtner has collaborated on Poe-themed performances with groups including the Latin Ballet of Virginia, the Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery, and the Garth Newel Music Center. He regularly speaks to audiences of all ages about strange and macabre subjects at various venues from the Steampunk World’s Fair to the Library of Congress and as far away as Japan.

Kim Shuck is widely published in journals, anthologies and a couple of solo books. She enjoys volunteering in SFUSD elementary school classrooms to share her loves of origami, poetry and basket making... in other words, math of various kinds. In 2019 Shuck was awarded an inaugural National Laureate Fellowship from the Academy of American Poets, and a PEN Oakland Censorship Award.

Karen Stackpole performs and records with metals/gongs duo Euphonics, Dean Santomieri, Ron Thompson, Myles Boisen, Moe Staiano, and John Schott’s Ensemble Diglossia as well as collaborating on various other projects. Gongs and resonance are the calling. Small distinct sounds (a la insect music) and use of silence and space rank high also. She is the drummer for Cactus Motel and has played with Malcolm Mooney and The Tenth Planet, Moxie, Bolshoi Rodeo, and Rare Thing. She is the percussionist for the improvising quartet, Vorticella. Her percussive efforts include work with the Onsite Dance Company and the San Francisco Shin Taido group. Karen also operates Stray Dog Recording Services and works as a freelance writer for DRUM! and Electronic Musician magazines.
