For Immediate Release

EMERGENCY VIGIL WEDNESDAY TO MARK KILLING OF ACTIVISTS ON FLOTILLA BOUND FOR GAZA

Bloomington--The Bloomington Peace Action Coalition and Just Peace Task Force of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Bloomington invite members of the Bloomington community of diverse faiths and political beliefs to gather at the courthouse square from 5 to 6  p.m., Wednesday, June 2, to mourn the killing of 10 or more activists on a flotilla delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza.

The purpose of the vigil is to honor the dead and the living.  We recognize the right of all peoples of the region to live in peace, security, and dignity.

Israel's killing of peace activists -- which appears to have occurred in international waters -- is an outrage to humanity.  So is its blockade of civilian goods to Gaza.  We hope this tragedy will lead our elected representatives to support a courageous and compassionate peace.

Congress has a special responsibility to rethink its one-sided support for the current Israeli government and instead to support the long-term interests of all, including Israelis and Palestinians, as well as immediate humanitarian needs.

Those attending are asked to respect the tragic nature of the occasion. The first half of the vigil will be in silence.

The Bloomington Peace Action Coalition, which stands for an end to the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, meets on the first Monday of the month, at 7 p.m, at the Monroe County Public Library.  The next meeting is on Monday, June 7th.

The Just Peace Task Force is one of the social justice task forces of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Bloomington, Indiana.  For information, please contact David Keppel (812.331.2815 or yes2unc...@gmail.com).
