Hey guys,

I am looking for a solution that will let me spool up new EC2
instances as I need them depending on certain conditions (say, CPU
usage)... I know Pool Party does this but not 100% sure on the
intended workflow.'

My biggest problem is dealing with memcached, since this is the main
reason I'd be spooling up new instances of EC2.

Does Pool Party allow me to start up whatever servers I want to, or is
it locked into Apache/MySQL etc...? If not, has anyone used Pool Party
with say nginx?

Poolparty is not tied to apache or mysql at all.  It is a general framework for spooling provisioning, and the expanding and contracting the cloud based on parameters you set.   The configuration of things like mysql are taken care of by plugins.  There is a plugin for apache and mysql.  I dont think there is one for memcached yet, (not sure tho) but it shouldn't be to hard to write one.

I don't know of anyone using Poolparty with Nginx, but that would be doale with a plugin as well.  There is a lot of good info on the github wiki.  Take a look at http://wiki.github.com/auser/poolparty/plugin-development.  You can also find several other plugins on Ari's github page, http://github.com/auser, also http://github.com/jashmenn
