All that being said, “The Raid” is still an intensely entertaining action flick, the kind I can see developing a legendary cult life on home video and the midnight movie circuit. The premise, as noted above, is simple: in Jakarta, crime lord Tama Riyandi has turned a derelict apartment building into a dangerous, ultra-secure safe house. It’s filled with the most dangerous sort of people imaginable, and Tama sees everything from a set of monitors on the top floor. After years of police looking the other way, the order has finally been given to take Tama down, and an elite 20-man SWAT team is sent to raid the building. Things quickly go south as the team realizes they are completely unprepared for the mission, stuck on the sixth of fifteen floors with ruthless killers above and below them.

If you haven't seen the flick, it's about an Indonesian swat team raids a giant tenement building to kidnap a crime boss (who is also kind of the de-facto lord of the building). Shortly into the raid, they're ambushed and trapped, and learn that there's no help coming. The crime boss sends his own men after them, and puts a bounty on their heads to bring the rest of the tenement's residents into the fight. The cops quickly run out of ammo and have to fight for their lives room-to-room and floor-to-floor, suffering heavy losses.

Throughout 2017, police across Indonesia raided saunas, nightclubs, hotel rooms, hair salons, and private homes on suspicion that gay or transgender people were inside. Militant Islamists often tipped off police or accompanied them during these raids. Police apprehended at least 300 people in 2017 because of their presumed sexual orientation or gender identity. Raids and arrests continued throughout 2018.

The film opens by introducing rookie cop Rama (Iko Uwais), who recites his morning prayers on a prayer rug, undergoes a grueling physical workout and then tenderly kisses his pregnant wife goodbye. He will be our avatar. The van carrying his team parks in front of the building and is met by a gray-haired man wearing a bulletproof vest over a bright sports shirt. He is the lieutenant, who has set up the raid. Wearing clothes that make you stand out from all the others is a dimwitted move, but then again how bright is Tama (Ray Sahetapy), the crimelord, by barricading himself on the top floor? Elementary strategy suggests he can be cornered there. He reminds me of my beloved movie cliche, the Climbing Killer.

Deep in the heart of Jakarta's slums lies an impenetrable safe house for the world's most dangerous killers and gangsters. Until now, the rundown apartment block has been considered untouchable. Cloaked under the cover of pre-dawn darkness and silence, an elite SWAT team is tasked with raiding the safe house in order to take down the notorious drug lord that runs it. But when a chance encounter with a spotter blows their cover and news of their assault reaches the drug lord, they find themselves stranded on the 6th floor with no way out. The unit must fight their way through the city's worst to survive their mission.

Witnesses said the raids began when members of the Indonesian military (TNI) and the police mobile brigade (Brimob) descended on Padang Salak hamlet in Bungku village at 4 p.m. on Dec. 7 together with PT Asiatic Persada personnel and local thugs paid by the company.

Norman estimated that as many as 1,500 staff, thugs and security forces were involved in the raids on Saturday and Sunday, a figure also reported in multiple Indonesian news outlets covering the attack.

Meldi was still able to snap several photos of the raid using another cell phone, but villagers said they have little documentation of the evictions while they were taking place since they were told not to take pictures or use their phones.

In total, victims said the teams destroyed 146 houses over three days. Reports also indicate evictions were carried out on Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Tanah Menang hamlet, where another 600 homes are located, however Mongabay-Indonesia has yet to confirm how many houses were destroyed in those raids.

The two men, identified only by their initials, BA and ZK, were killed Wednesday in a shootout with police during a raid in Lampung, a province at the southern tip of Sumatra island, said Aswin Siregar, the spokesperson of the squad, known as Densus 88. An officer was seriously injured in the shootout and was hospitalized, he said.

Siregar said at a news conference that the raid was part of a broader nationwide crackdown on Jemaah Islamiyah following tips that it is recruiting and training new members. The shadowy network is blamed for attacks in the Philippines and Indonesia, including the 2002 bombings on the Indonesian resort island of Bali that killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists. The U.S. has designated it a terrorist group.

As Canberras closed in to their target, the ack -ack batteries opened up signaling raiders have been detected. PAF pilots and ground crew ran to take shelter in trenches and they had the rare privilege of seeing the first Canberra drop flares to illuminate the airfield and then thunder down the main runway at 200 feet, before pulling up at its end in an wingover to turn back and drop its bomb load at the end of a dispersal of parked aircraft. Had luck favoured the Tuskers, they would have wiped out the entire strategic strike component of the PAF with a single blow as the entire force of sixteen B 57s were lined up wingtip to wingtip on a dispersal. Unfortunately for IAF, the single 4000 lb bomb that fell closest to the parked B 57s hit soft soil and its explosive force was dissipated. However, bombs dropped from other members of Tusker force found their marks as fuel dumps were set ablaze, ATC building was flattened and aircraft on ground were damaged.

The raid shook the PAF out of its complacency. No airfield or town was out of range of Indian bombers. No one in Pakistan had thought that the IAF would bomb Peshawar with impunity. The raid also forced the Americans (USAF), that had maintained a full- fledged Signal Intelligence base about 20 miles South of Peshawar, to evacuate all its personnel with families through Iran and return only after cessation of hostilities.

Indonesian film about elite police officers that raid a tenement building run by a ruthless drug lord. The police must battle with an army of determined killers bent on preventing anyone from reaching their boss, who's hiding on the top floor. With Iko Uwais, Ananda George and Ray Sahetapy. Directed by Gareth Evans. (Original title: "Serbuan Maut.") [1:41]

Another essential asset to the raids are the assault climbers of Golf Company. Their school, a one and a half month course, makes these Marines experts in traversing cliffs, steep earth and urban climbing obstacles, enabling the company to attack from avenues that the enemy least expects, according to Lance Cpl. Dylan M. Thompson, the chief assault climber with Golf Company.

If players die within the raid, they are placed outside the fighting area, and can only proceed if other team members succeed in completing the current challenge. If the entire team is killed, players will lose all progress and would be kicked out of the raid to try again.
