Error: trying to run helm within a running helm session

I'm running pony-mode in the latest spacemacs (in fact, I added the integration and I'm teasing out the last little bits where it doesn't fit together smoothly.)
When I try to run pony-manage, it gives "Error: trying to run helm within a running helm session". Have you ever seen this error? Am I using the command correctly?
