GIMP comes with a built-in help system, available in dozens of languages. Onceyou have started the program, press F1 for context-sensitive help.You may have to install the help pages from a separate package (gimp-help),depending on how your version of GIMP was packaged.
The release of a GIMP Help manual has been long overdue. We published a 2.10.0test release, but that was never meant to be an official release.Due to the lack of volunteers and the amount of documentation needing updates,this test release eventually became the de facto first 2.10 release, althoughit was outdated in a lot of places and missing documentation for newer features.
Not that we want to discourage you from using this release version of themanual, but the online manual is being updated daily. It should generally beyour first choice, unless you have limited internet bandwidth or other reasonsto prefer the offline version.
We modernized our website to be more in line with the main GIMP website andimproved the information about our manuals. New automated builds are publishedto our website once a day. Even better, our website now shows the completionstatus for each language.A lot of languages still need considerable work. If you would like to helpimprove that, please visit more information.
Several new translations are being worked on: Czech (restored), Hungarian,Portuguese, Ukrainian. In addition to these, installers are now alsoavailable for Slovenian and Swedish, which were missing from the 2.10.0 testrelease.Persian was added too, but since no actual translations for the 2.10.34 manualwere made yet, we do not supply an installer for that.Almost all other languages were updated to some degree.
Since GIMP is getting closer to a 3.0 release, we need to update ourdocumentation to add all changes that have been made compared to GIMP 2.10,and of course we will also keep updating the 2.10 manual.To make this effort more manageable, we would really welcome more helping hands.
The US English manual, that is used as the base for translations, is known to contain outdated sections, errors and omissions. Please note that both this manual and the translations are works in progress and may be incomplete. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
To improve the manual and translations we are looking for more volunteers to help us out. If you are interested in writing documentation for the English language manual, or in translating the manual, then please get in contact with us.
The online user manuals are updated once a day. After each language (except the US English manual), it lists the completion status, i.e. what percentage of the manual has been translated. The order of the languages is based on their language code.
I cannot find instructions on how to INSTALL Gimp User Manual. I keep getting messages that "User Manual Has Not Been Installed" when I tried to set Preferences to access Help via locally installed manual vs. the Online version. i am able to download as PDF but not INSTALL.
On OS X:
If you got your GIMP from gimp.lisanet.de, then1. go to the Download section there,2. scroll down to 'GIMP 2.8 user manual',3. download the user manual of your language,4. unzip the downloaded manual and install the unzipped installer package.
If you got it for instance from the GIMP download site:Unfortunately I don't see a ready-to-use help.Perhaps the packager of the OS X GIMP build can include it?Otherwise you will have to use the online help from the internet.
You should get GIMP from gimp.org whenever possible. What operating systemare you using Mike? If we know that then people can stop throwing outblanket guesses of support and we can actually get you the rightinformation you need.

Unfortunately the OS X build we usually recommend hasn'treleased version 2.8.6 (yet) and all attempts to get the previous 2.8.4build working with a manually installed help failed for me.As adviced at the download page one could also try the MacPorts orFink builds.
MacPorts has released only the English help in version 2.8. and usuallytakes very long to get a running version, because everything is builtfrom scratch. Thus that would only be a solution if one had lots oftime. Fink seems currently to be unreachable.

It might work with the builds from gimp.lisanet.de. Surely it doesn'twork for me for instance with Clayton Walkers build.The mentioned PKG file installs to '/Users/Shared/Library/Application\ Support/Gimp/help'. Even when setting the environment variableGIMP2_HELP_URI=file:///Users/Shared/Library/Application Support/Gimp/helpit doesn't work. I set GIMP2_HELP_URI by editing$HOME/MacOSX/environment.plist, logging off and on and starting the GIMP application icon.
GIMP tells me in the Preferences, that the help files are now found,but calling the help with the built-in help browser results in theerror message
'The GIMP help browser is not available.The GIMP help browser plug-in appears to be missing from your installation. You may instead use the web browser for reading the help pages.'

Use Synaptic package manager (System/Administration/Synaptic Package Manager) and search gimp help in the search box. Mark the package of your language for installation and click apply. Give password when required.
When I uninstalled the snap version of GIMP (from Ubuntu Software), and installed GIMP via the command sudo apt install gimp I was able to view the help pages online (after reading How do I open the user manual in GIMP?).
(If I remember well, in the snap version of GIMP the message that the manual wasn't locally installed was displayed after the two commands above (in Edit -> Preferences -> Help System) , but this changed when I uninstalled the snap version of GIMP and installed the apt version.)
The help pages were locally stored in the directory /usr/share/gimp/2.0/help/en. At first I wasn't aware that Firefox opens my locally stored html-pages by default. Firefox 113 was unable to display the files when I tried to open them via GIMP and via nautilus (it only displayed the pages when I searched for it in the Firefox browser by pressing ctrl+o). Firefox's update to 114 of 6/6/2023 solved the issue.
The problem now is that I want the GIMP Help files installed too. If I install the gimp-help-en and gimp-help-common via the MX LInux repository, they are not recognized by GIMP (Edit > Preferences > Interface > Help System > The User Manual is not installed locally ). If I go to Help > Help I get:
The GIMP user manual is not installed in your language. You may either install the additional help package or change your preferences to use the online version.
