Young Rock is an American television sitcom based upon the life of professional wrestler and actor Dwayne Johnson, also known by his ring name "The Rock".[1] The series is created by Johnson, Jeff Chiang and Nahnatchka Khan. It aired on NBC from February 16, 2021, to February 24, 2023. In April 2021, the series was renewed for a second season.[2] A holiday special episode aired on December 15, 2021, and the second season premiered on March 15, 2022. In May 2022, the series was renewed for a third season,[3] which premiered on November 4, 2022.[4] In June 2023, the series was cancelled after three seasons.[5]
The sitcom is organized around a frame story set in the early 2030s, beginning with Johnson running for office in the 2032 United States presidential election. Each episode involves Johnson participating in an interview or other conversation which leads him to flashback to a story from one of three periods of Johnson's life, with occasional episodes where all three periods are shown. In the first season, Johnson is depicted as a ten-year-old in Hawaii; as a high school student in Pennsylvania; and as a college student and football player at the University of Miami.[6]
On January 11, 2020, NBC gave a straight-to-series order to Young Rock, a comedy series based on Dwayne Johnson's early life created by Johnson and Nahnatchka Khan and produce the series with Jeff Chiang, Dany Garcia, Jennifer Carreras, Hiram Garcia, and Brian Gewirtz with Khan and Chiang writing the pilot.[48] In November 2020, production on the series commenced in Australia.[49] On January 15, 2021, it was announced that the series would premiere on February 16, 2021.[50] On April 30, 2021, NBC renewed the series for a second season,[2] again filmed in Australia.[51] A holiday special episode titled as "A Christmas Peril" airedon December 15, 2021, ahead of the second season premiere on March 15, 2022.[52][53] On May 12, 2022, NBC renewed the series for a third season,[3] which was filmed in Memphis, Tennessee.[54] The third season premiered on November 4, 2022, following Lopez vs Lopez as a part of NBC's Friday Comedy Hour block.[4] On June 9, 2023, NBC canceled the series after three seasons.[5]
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment released the complete first season of Young Rock on DVD and manufacture-on-demand Blu-ray on March 29, 2022,[58] with its second season was released on DVD and Blu-ray also as manufacture-on-demand titles on November 8, seven months after the first season's home release.[58][59]
The series received generally positive reviews from critics throughout its run. On Rotten Tomatoes, the first season has a rating of 90% based on 31 reviews, with an average rating of 7.70/10. The website's critical consensus reads, "Anchored by a winsome ensemble, Young Rock is an endearing peek behind the curtain of both Dwayne Johnson's childhood and the wild world of wrestling."[60] On Metacritic, it has a weighted average score of 66 out of 100, based on 18 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[61]
The series was one of 101 out of the 200 most-popular scripted television series that received the ReFrame Stamp for the years 2020 to 2021. The stamp is awarded by the gender equity coalition ReFrame and industry database IMDbPro for film and television projects that are proven to have gender-balanced hiring, with stamps being awarded to projects that hire women, especially women of color, in four out of eight key roles for their production.[75]
The first season of the series managed to bring back all of the familiarity of the original Fraggle Rock, including the deep mythology, the stellar puppetry, and quality music we associate with the show. The changes were thoughtful and respectful, finding ways to tell updated stories and not feel too stuck in the 1980s for new viewers. It was fun and exciting while also tickling the nostalgic parts of our brains and letting us live in the era of new Fraggle Rock content once again (or, for most of us, for the first time in our lives).
In case you are not familiar with this blog, I have become quite invested in this little corner of the King Multiverse this season, along with its characters and their hopes, dreams, issues, loves, etc.
Annie, Chance, Nadia and Abdi head to the site where Annie had buried Ace. Abdi and Nadia plan to use explosives to destroy The Marsten House for good. Chance provides a distraction, by walking in the crowd of the bewitched town people. However, Chance is captured by one of the members of the cult and taken to Ace.
Pop then turns on Ace and his cult, and we learn that he injected himself with anti psychotic drugs before he was shot by Ace. Pop then organizes Abdi and Nadia to destroy The Marsten House. Pop then helps Chance escape.
Ace is stabbed by Joy, who escapes from the cult. The air is filled with thick clouds of smoke. A figure in a dark hood watches from Castle Lake as the chaos ensues. The figure then disappears into thin air.
Annie then heads back into the house and finds a letter written by Joyce, addressed to Annie. The letter states that Joy is desiring her independence and some space from her mother, and that Joy is looking to become an emancipated minor.
Hold on to your radishes! The Fraggles are back with a new season and lots of new adventures to sing and dance themselves into. After a critically acclaimed first season, the Fraggles are facing new challenges and meeting new friends in Season 2. Half the fun for adult viewers is not knowing whose famous voice will be heard coming out of the fuzzy face of a visitor to the Rock and this season has some great guest stars. Also, the return of Daveed Diggs as the troubadour Jamdolin is a welcome addition to the repertoire of regular characters.
Doc is excited about his new acquisition and as Sprocket returns home from chasing Fluffinella and he brags about the 64KB of Ram and 6 peripheral slots on the motherboard. (Which is funny because it actually has twice as much ram and two fewer slots.)
Castle Rock is left at an interesting point. If this were a horror novel, the final moments of the first season would work an ironic endpoint to the tragic story of Henry Deaver. However, there are still enough unanswered questions that the showrunners could continue the saga of Henry and his family. My personal preference always leans towards an anthology format. I would like to see another season focused on a different set of central characters with Henry, Molly, and the others becoming background figures and their own stories being hinted at. However, the creators choose to take the series they have managed to produce a deeply satisfying horror show that is respectful of its source.
Hogan, a veteran of both wrestling and Hollywood, explained that nothing in their business lasts forever and that sometimes what you think is a ceiling is really just a floor to something greater. The only way to know for sure is to break through.
The season ends in 2033 when Dwayne and Randall learn that the prime minister of the (fictional) country Gjelghiughm, Angela Honig, had agreed to his coffee trade deal with the United States. After negotiating all season long, they were going back to the U.S. victorious after Dwayne suffered a huge loss in his presidential campaign the previous year. Newly invigorated by his ability to make a world impact, Dwayne declares that the time has come for him to start his very own country.
If you already bought Fraggle Rock Season 1, then you need no introduction as to HIT's high-quality presentation from packaging to bonus features. Thankfully, Season 2 continues the same high standards as last year.
While the menus on the Fraggle Rock Season 1 set are fairly basic (highlighted text on selection), improvements are made with Season 2. Motion menus are featured with moving backgrounds and falling rocks (similar to the later singe-disc Fraggle releases). An instrumental version of the theme is played on each menu.
The cast and crew that are interviewed include: producer Lawrence S. Mirkin; writers Sugith Varughese, David Young, Robert Sandler, and Susan Juhl; performers Karen Prell, Steve Whitmire, Dave Goelz, and Jerry Nelson; creative consultants Duncan Kenworthy and Jocelyn Stevenson; and composer Phil Balsam. Noticeably absent are Kathy Mullen (performer of Mokey and Cotterpin) and Michael Frith, conceptual designer of the series.
The packaging is the same as last year with an embossed Fraggle Rock logo on the front of the box. When you open the box a cardboard book appears with each disc having its own page. The pitch book is in a slot in the back of the packaging. The characters and colors on each disc match the menus for consistency.
