Richard Heinberg Speaking at WPI May 14th

Dear friends,

In mid-April the graduating seniors at WPI (Worcester Polytechnic Institute) learned that the Institute's official commencement speaker - sending them into the world with words of encouragement and wisdom - would be Rex Tillerson, the Chairman and CEO of ExxonMobil.  Many members of WPI’s graduating class were profoundly disappointed at this choice.  Mr. Tillerson, as the leader of a company that has funded and spread disinformation on climate change, has been instrumental in undermining American’s trust in the scientific process and its institutions.  Needless to say, Rex Tillerson is not the individual these graduating seniors would most like to hear from, at the final event, as they complete their education at WPI.

The students undertook to invite an alternate speaker, one they felt would speak to their values and concerns, to their commencement event.  They invited Richard Heinberg, the Senior Fellow-in-Residence of Post-Carbon Institute, to present an alternative address to WPI’s "official" commencement speaker.

Richard's work is well known to many of you; he is the author of at least a half-dozen books and countless articles on the world's energy predicament and learning to live sustainably - one of the best minds I know of working to educate the public about U.S. and global energy / resource limits.  Raising awareness of the twin threats of resource depletion and climate change, Richard and his colleagues at Post-Carbon Institute strive for a world that is both just and sustainable.

The Institute (WPI) and the students have arrived at an agreement: Richard will speak at the same venue as Mr. Tillerson, later in the afternoon of graduation day.  Richard's talk will take place at 3PM on the afternoon of May 14th, Main Quad Stage, and the public - yes, that's YOU - is invited!

The students and we are all hoping for a good public turnout, standing in solidarity with them, and speaking out for a more sustainable future that will benefit our health, our economy, our society, and our living planet as a whole. Local and Massachusetts-area media will almost certainly be there, reporting on the event.  Celebratory music led by the dynamic folk-duo Magpie will follow Heinberg’s address.  PLEASE COME, JOIN US AT WPI, and LISTEN!

A .pdf invitation is attached.

Oh, one other request - please re-distribute this invite to anyone you think might be interested.  I apologize for the shotgun-broadcast nature of this message, but wanted to get it out to you all as quickly as possible, since it's only 6 days to May 14th.

best wishes,
   Dick Lawrence
