Dear friend

With today's release of the US National Climate Assessment, following on the heels of the IPCC's 5th Assessment report, it is more than ever clear that humanity must stop burning hydrocarbons ("fossil fuels") if we are to have a chance of mitigating Mother Nature's high fever. Of course, ending our pyromania seems completely implausible from today's perspective, but we have seen miracles more than once in our time.

Fortunately, electricity from solar and wind is increasing rapidly, so we know how to upgrade our power plants to clean energy, even though we still have a few details (storage, etc.) to be worked out. More challenging, though, is to transform our outmoded transportation system to renewable energy.

Several teams of creative and thoughtful young people have taken the challenge of developing solar transportation to heart, and their work is being showcased with a full-scale prototype, an operating scale model, a virtual 4D model and more on May 17th (10AM-8PM) and 18th (10AM-6PM) at Maker Faire in San Mateo, the greatest "show and tell" on earth!

The Spartan Superway website tells about the student project. A portfolio of results by San Jose State and the other hard-working teams can be found at the INIST website library. (There you can find the Superway Summary Report for a sneak preview of the Maker Faire exhibit.)

If you would like to support the Spartan Superway initiative, please visit their crowd-funding website.

If you happen to be in town, please come visit the Spartan Superway exhibit on the 17th and 18th at the Maker Faire.

There will be other opportunities to learn about the Superway solar-powered ATN system – at the annual ASES conference at Intersolar on July 6-10 in San Francisco and at Podcar City 8 on September 3-5 at the Arlanda Airport north of Stockholm.

Thanks for your interest!
