Wyatt Garfield

Dear Classmates,

I have just learned that Wyatt Garfield, WyGar to us, died on August 4.

Mr. Garfield was an important person for us.  As Director of Admission when we all applied, he admitted us.  More important, he sold us on Pomfret.  He was an English teacher to many of us our freshman year.  In my case, he was my freshman advisor.  

I maintained some contact with WyGar by visiting he and his family on Cuttyhunk a number of times.  I last heard from him in 2010 when he wrote to thank me for a small donation I made to Pomfret in his honor.  Although fundraising is not my role as class secretary, I am sure Pomfret would be happy to receive any memorial gifts.

I'm sure we all have our own reflections about WyGar.  I would like to invite you to share your memories and thoughts by replying to me.  I will combine all replies and send them on to Pomfret.

Toby, thanks for your message on Wyatt Garfield. I always liked the man and I am sorry we lost such a great guy. Mr. Garfield was the first Pomfret faculty person I met when I visited the school way back in 1957. I remember having my first meal at his table with his very wonderful wife also present. Funny how one remembers trivial things like that.To his family I am sorry for your loss. RALPH ARIETTA, 1962..

Petro,

I don't know.  The Development office is copied on the emails in this group so perhaps they'll take that as a suggestion.  I know that contributions to Pomfret can be made in honour of someone, and it would be so acknowledged in the annual financial report.  I suspect that this might be the best route.

I hope that you have been having a nice summer.  It’s great to hear from you again, though I’m sorry it has been under such sad circumstances, Mr. Garfield was a wonderful man.

 

For those interested in making a gift in his memory you can do one of two things.  If you would like to give online go to https://www.pomfretschool.org/giveonline.  There is a box where you can enter his name and the contribution will be listed in his memory in the annual report as Toby described. If you prefer to mail a check, you may send it to me at the address below and just include a note that you would like it to be in Mr. Garfield’s memory and I will make sure it is taken care of for you.

 

I hope you enjoy this last week of summer and the upcoming long weekend.  Faculty meetings will be starting on campus this week with pre-season athletes coming back on the 2^nd.  It’s a wonderful time of year and its nice to have the campus bustling with students and classes again.

Thanks, Toby, for letting us know.

I ran into him at Pomfret a few years ago following a service for Ben Morgan. He seemed scarcely changed from our time there. I told him he had taught me how to row. Big smile. But I learned a lot more from him than that during those practices.
