1. Do vigorous physical activity -- jumping jacks, run around, etc.

2. Apply pain to yourself
Put clothespins on yourself -- this has the advantage of increasing levels of pain as you leave them on longer, and having adjustable difficulty depending on where you apply them
  • Electrical stimulation via TENS unit -- adjustable, and surprisingly cheap on amazon, about $50
  • Eat ice cubes
  • Wear rubber bands on your wrist and snap them
3. Listen to pop music / listen to an alarm clock on repeat

4. Drink water

5. Hyperventilate by taking large breaths very rapidly for 10-30 seconds (until you feel a buzzing sensation)

6. Sing or play music

7. Talk to people

8. Write stuff

9. Video games (not necessarily action, either--Civilization 5 has been keeping my roommate up for a good few days now)

10. Eat small amounts of stuff constantly

11. Watch suspenseful TV. I don't really watch TV at all, but around when I was starting adaptation I checked out Orphan Black and discovered that just 10mins watching part of an episode could get MW really excited etc.

12. Juggling, or better, spinning poi or devil's sticks. I find 5-10mins of moving objects with rotational momentum to be hugely energizing. Worth investing money in this kind of toy.

7.1 Find other ways of promoting a feeling of social connection (look at photos of people you love, past events you spend with friends, etc.)

9.1 Games that start quickly let you jump into the action, wake yourself up, and get back to work - Lugaru worked well for me (and, it triggers that part of your brain that doesn't want you to get eaten by a wolf).

10.1 Dark chocolate, hmmmm.

11.1 … or watch funny or emotionally engaging things: wimp.com is a pretty good source of short funny or engaging things

13. Make your environment very bright (I have one of these lamps - you can feel the radiant heat, but it's bright - I also have one of these much more expensive light sources).
